Greek mythology is the body of myths and teachings that belong to the ancient Greek and Zeus is one of the mythological characters, meaning that “Zeus” is a myth. Religious followers of Greek Mythology were hellenic polytheists who worshiped the ancient Greek Gods, including the Olympians, nature divinities, cynthic gods and heroes. Among the many gods who appear in Greek myths, Zeus reigned supreme. Zeus was characterized as brawny, brave, intelligent, and also was caring to everyone around him, even to people he had never even met. His father was a powerful god. Cronus, the father of Zeus, was the ruler of Mount Olympus, and the ruler of Titans (subordinate gods). His mother had a lot of strength too, and was the Supreme god of the Olympians. Rhea, the goddess of all the sky and goodness, was an intelligent being. Zeus was the youngest brother out of six. His siblings’ names were Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, Demeter and Hera. When Zeus was born, his mother had to take him away to be raised by a shepard family because his father, fearing of a prophecy, was swallowing all of his children when they were born. Later, Rhea took him back to Mount Olympus. Zeus freed his siblings and overthrew his father. Unlike Cronus before him, Zeus was good to his people. Zeus’ reputation in the myth was that of a caring God. By the time the Greek state was formed, people believed that gods and goddesses ruled their world. Storytellers would share the journey of the gods to explain the mysteries in life. The gods were believed to be immortal, meaning they live forever. The storytellers would create aspects of Greek customs and beliefs into tales. Their stories were full of adventure and tragedy. Some stories told of of the creation of the world and the origins of gods. Others helped explain natural events such as earthquakes and storms. People believed the tales, which over time became myths. The people in their town worshipped gods by building temples and statues in their honor. They felt like the gods would protect and guide them. People passed down the myths through generation by word of mouth. Later, famous poets, Homer and Hesiod, wrote them down. Today these myths give us a unique look at what life was like in ancient Greece more than 2,000 years ago.
