During her speech at Virginia Tech, Zizi Papacharissi discussed the evolving industry of modern media. She argued that the recent blend of news, fact, drama, opinion, and emotion is responsible for the social and political consequences of the internet. Specifically, she was effective in her presentation by emotionally connecting to the audience, defining the evolution of news over time, and describing how social media networks can act as a news sharing mechanism. Papacharissi gave a compelling and informative presentation. The speaker used visual aids to enhance the audiences’ understanding of her overall message. Additionally, Papacharissi had prestigious titles, such as a PhD, that gave her credibility amongst the students, faculty, and guests. Her strong stage presence also reinforced her experience and authority. As she spoke to the crowd, Zizi moved around the stage well, which in turn caused the audience to be engaged in her presentation. Furthermore, she did not let distractions prohibit her from connecting with the audience. An example of this is when the power went out in the auditorium. Because news reporters are no longer the only ones to present information, citizens feel their way into the story, thus creating many layers of journalism. This use of affective publics does have both pros and cons, however. With many citizens presenting their beliefs, news on social media is powered by affective statements of opinion, fact, or a blend of both. In other words, many persuasive statements are opinion based rather fact based. On the other hand, with a large portion of society starting to dominate the media industry, citizens can emphasize and expose many underrepresented
