Leo was first cataloged by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy in the 2nd century. Leo is one of the oldest constellations in the sky. Here 's a picture of this constellation. The Leo 's creation myth is interesting and confusing as well. The story of this constellation is typically attributed to an ancient story of Hercules (Greek mythology) and his 12 trials.
The constellation I have chosen for this assignment is Leo Major. I 've chosen it mostly because of previous studies I have done on it. Leo, being one of twelve zodiacs, is located in between Cancer (to the west) and Virgo (to the east). Its name originates from the Latin root for "lion". The ancient Greeks represented it as the Nemean lion that was killed by Hercules as on of his "twelve labors".
(More information on which will be outlined below.) The Gemini constellation is said to represent the twins Castor and Pollux in popular Greek mythology. There is much debate surrounding the Twins’ parentage, but it is largely accepted that their mother was Queen Leda of Sparta, and that she was raped by Zeus in the guise of a swan. Leda, after which, became pregnant with Helen, (who went on to be more famously known as Helen of Troy,) and Pollux. Then, later
“Cassie for Cassiopeia the constellation, the queen tied to her chair in the northern sky, who was beautiful but vain, placed in the heavens by the sea god Poseidon as a punishment for her boasting. In greek her name means “she whose words excel”” (pg. 3). The name Cassiopeia symbolizes hope because constellations gives people a sense of hope and light during a dark night. Cassie gives the people who are still alive hope that everything will be okay and we will defeat the Others.
Here are some of the interesting Myths behind the 6 Northern Zodiac Signs: Aries - a Golden Ram represents the Aries Sign. The myth begins with two sibling children, Phrixus and Helle. The children's mother, Nephele, dies and their father, King Athamas, remarried a woman named Ino. She was very envious of the children and quickly planned to get rid of them for
Mercury moves very quickly around the Sun, completing its revolution around the Sun every 88 days, spending about 14-30 days in each of the twelve signs. The ancient Greeks thought that Mercury was actually two stars, they called them Apollo and Mercury. Egyptians also thought that Mercury was two stars, and they called the stars Set and Horus, also named the Stars of Thought. It is important to take note of the fact that Mercury is always within 28 degrees of the Sun at all times, meaning that your Mercury sign can only be in the same sign as your Sun sign, or the sign that falls before or after your Sun sign. For example, if your Sun is in Scorpio, then your Mercury can only be in Libra, Scorpio, or
The constellation that I chose was Hercules because not only was Hercules my favourite movie as a child, but it was one of the most interesting things that I learned about in muggle schooling. This constellation was first discovered in 1714 by an English astronomer, Edmond Halley, which was also included in Messier's catalog as Messier 13 on June 1, 1764. Hercules is the 5th biggest constellation in the sky, although the constellation has no first or second magnitude stars. The brightest star within this constellation is Beta Herculius (also known as Kornephoros), it is a yellow giant of magnitude 2.8 and is about 148 light years away from Earth. The creation myth behind this constellation started with the birth of Hercules, the son of Zeus
Not many scientists are certain when the Assyrian Astrology began, but many suspect it was around the years B.C. in 612 B.C. The zodiac circle is one of the oldest and most used forms of astrology. The idea conceived by the Assyrians in order to have the zodiac circle was based off of two different Greek traditions. The first tradition consisted of the 12 signs of zodiac, animal constellations also dwelt in the tradition. This tradition was built up throughout the years 3,200-500 BC and it was made into a religious tradition in Mesopotamia.
My favourite constellation is a pair of stars identified in the ancient world by the Nords, who named them the Eyes of Thjazi. This constellation is perhaps better known in modern times as Gemini, the Twins of the Zodiac, combining the stars Castor and Pollux. These two stars are matched in brightness and sit side by side, which is why they resemble a pair of eyes, and reach their peak in the sky in January. For this reason, they are associated with the winter goddess Skadi in the Nordic tradition. I’ve chosen this ancient and unique constellation for its simplicity, beauty, and the exciting tale which provides its namesake.
The constellation I have chosen is Aquila. Aquila has 10 main stars, and 65 Flamsteed stars. It 's known for the being in the shape of an eagle, and the brightest star is Altair, which is two times more massive than the sun. Altair will only live 2 billion years, compared to the Sun 's 10 billion years. The reason I found this constellation interesting is because the Pioneer 11 spacecraft has been sent towards Lambda Aquilae, which is 125 light years away!
I picked the Lepus constellation. because Lepus is the 51st constellation in size and takes up a area of 290 square degrees. I also choose it cause its in the shape of a rabbit. and it also has very interesting myths behind it. The Lepus constellation lays in the northern sky.
I have chosen Taurus. Mostly because it's the constellation I know the most about, and (to take a trip to the astrology-part) it's my zodiac sign, so it has kind of followed me around my entire life. It's one of the oldest constellations there are, they can date it back to the early Bronze Age!
My favorite constellation is Orion, because it is a very bright star in our solar system. I also like the shape of Orion, because it looks if it consists of several parts. You can see the star from the earth and it is located on the celestial equator. as I told, it is a very bright star, even one of the brightest in the sky. Orion is the 26th biggest constellation.
