Why There Shouldn't Be Reading In Gym Class
Physical education is an essential part of the school curriculum, helping students to develop their physical fitness and overall health. While reading is also a crucial skill for students to learn, it is not appropriate to teach it in gym class. There are several reasons why gym teachers shouldn't teach reading in gym class.
First and foremost, gym teachers are not trained to teach reading. Reading instruction requires specific knowledge and skills in literacy education, including phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension strategies. Gym teachers may not have the necessary qualifications or experience to effectively teach these skills to students. Reading is a sedentary activity that requires students to be still and focused. Combining reading with gym class would be counterproductive, as it would take away from the time and energy that students need to engage in physical activity. Students come to gym class expecting to move and exercise, not to sit and read. Introducing reading into a gym class could cause confusion and frustration among students, as well as detract from the overall quality of the physical education program.
Thirdly, teaching reading in gym class could be confusing for students. It can be challenging for students to understand why they are being asked to read in a class that is typically focused on movement and exercise. This can lead to a sense of cognitive dissonance and make it difficult for students to engage in the reading activity. Moreover, students may struggle to make the connection between reading and physical fitness, which could lead to a lack of motivation or interest in both
While it may be true that even if a student is reading Sports Illustrated, they will still become more literate and reflective than if they hadn’t read at all, it is also true that the student is then less likely to read the same desired material outside of class because they are already being forced to read it inside of class. Moreover, if class time is spent reading something such as Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers: The Story of Success, the student will be more inclined to read Sports Illustrated outside of class; thus, increasing their reading time altogether. On the report of Engaging Schools: Fostering High School Students’ Motivation to Learn, “studies have shown that students who read outside of school become better readers (Anderson, Wilson, and Fielding, 1988; Fielding, 1994; Guthrie, Schafer, Wang, and Afflerbach, 1995)” (64). Therefore, by engaging in materials which the students may not be interested in during the school day, they will be more likely to read other subject matters outside of school and consequently increase their reading

In “Why University Students Don’t Read: What Professors Can Do To Increase Compliance” Mary E. Hoeft questions whether why students don’t like to read the assigned textbooks. Hoeft found that it is essential to know that there is a multiple of things we can do to boost the completion of reading assignments, for the professors who consider reading completion to be the main component to schooling (qtd. in Hoft 15). Some of these things could include could giving out quizzes, supplementary assignments, and to give reminders and making it interesting at the same time. While Hoeft suggest that reading completion is a team effort between the students and faculty, the emphasis of her argument is on whether students care about what they are reading.
In watching Dr. Bear's video it is apparent that the most commonly used strategy was creating challenges through questioning for both the teacher and the student. As Dr. Bear tried to figure out the student's general understanding of the subject matter and he encountered a word that he thought might be unfamiliar, he would simply stop and ask about it. For example, during the discussion prior to reading the book, one of the students suggested that Pandas have pouches, Dr. Bear paused to ask the students about the word pouch. The intricate series of interactions between Dr. Bear, students, and text in a self-reading reflects countless instructional decisions and the unique quality of the relationship that has been built between teacher and students.
Reading is something that we do every day and all day, no matter what form of reading it may be, perhaps, reading a text, skimming over a tweet, reading a billboard, or even reading a long lengthy passage that was instructed by your professor. When it comes to reading many advantages can be taken away from just the shortest passages. A person who reads more is more likely to be up to date with the latest news, show empathic growth and pro- social behavior. People with little reading experience are less likely to be equipped for the general population, resulting in high school dropouts, unemployment, and a declining social life. This makes gym practically useless for them. While gym students exercise 4 hours and 30 minutes per week, athletes exercise for 12 hours per week. Athletes already get way more exercise than gym students, so they should have the ability to skip gym. Also, gym class provides minimal to no benefit for athletes. Since they already exercise a lot, gym class doesn’t help them improve their fitness level.

When a student plays a sport, then the lesson of P.E. is already learned. To play a sport you have to be fit, eat nutritious food, and exercise a lot. It makes no sense for an athlete to take gym class then because the lesson is taught by their coaches. Gym teachers are used to be served as role models, and to demonstrate the knowledge of health, physically wellness. Athletes already have an example of a healthy lifestyle.
This is currently my first year enrolling in Richland College, but the experience is just the beginning. The earliest memory of reading was all the syllabus that each class had before school started. I chose to be in college because I’m striving for a better future, instead of working at a retail store and less pay for all the work I’ve contributed. Introduction Lenses on Reading: An Introduction to Theories and Modelsis an excellent read. The authors bring a lot of useful information to not only the field of education but to the classroom. Throughout the book, the authors provided vignettes to show theoretical models in action which gives the reader a visual of how the theoretical model can be applied. The layout of the chapters was in chronological order which is was also helpful.
It has been a topic, often discussed about amongst students and school all across America. “ Should P.E be mandatory?” students and teachers often debate on whether to make physical education mandatory. Although many students claim that P.E is a fun way to exercise, some students think otherwise. A high number of students say that P.E is a waste of time, and is more torture than it is education.
Most of the people in the gym had their headphones in and were inside of their own world, oblivious to what was going on in all of the surrounding areas. The majority of the conversations that were going on were most often strictly gym based questions. I heard a few questions that were not just gym based but for the most part I was hearing questions about the weight amounts people should use, or questions of people asking another person to put more weight onto their machines and such things. One specific conversation I heard was two guys talking about the pre-workout and post-workout they drink, the guys were discussing their favorites and why they were their favorites.
