Based on numerous amounts of studies and randomized controlled trials of psychotherapy has demonstrated extensive evidence of effectiveness and efficiency. These studies and trials examine the impact of evidence based practice approaches, on individuals, in a clinical setting. The motive is to understand the extent to which each psychotherapy approach achieves its intended effect with a diverse population, effectiveness. Along with, understanding the extent of which psychotherapy approach has the best ability to achieve its intended effect in a specified setting, efficiency.

The most critical factor of psychotherapy outcome is relationship between therapist and client(Pomerantz, 2016, p. 254). This reiterates the Skilled Helpers text. When an individual seeks help, the skilled helper or therapist has to understand why help is needed and the best methods to use. This builds the relationship between the two. The other factors are hope and attention (Pomerantz, 2016, p. 255).
While it is easy to understand why attention is a critical factor, hope is not so easy. Giving a client hope for a change, facilitate improvement. Change and improve are one of the goals of helping, which states, “help clients manage their problems in living more effectively and develop unused or underused resources and opportunities more fully at the service of life-enhancing outcomes” (Egan, 2014, p.9).

Should we look more carefully at the therapeutic relationship or at specific approaches to therapy, or should there be a different focus altogether?
A mixture of therapeutic relationship and specific approaches should be focused on. Several studies have shown the importance of both. I believe the topics are so intricately entwined that there cannot be one without the other. For example, when a client comes to the therapist for help, the therapist should be able to understand, through building a strong therapeutic relationship, the specific approach to use. If they are not able to help, they can still refer the client to someone that
