When a child is living in poverty there are many values and principles which need to be underpinned. The child must always be put first and their opinions must always be considered. The child is going to know what they want so they should always be asked first. The child’s rights should always be promoted. When working in partnership with the child’s parents, their contributions should always be respected, sometimes the parents contributions can help benefit the child the most because they know the most about their child. The family’s culture, views, values, background and structure should be respected. As a practitioner, you could suggest something to the family which could offend their culture. A child could have dyslexia, as a result of this, the practitioners could suggest ways for the family to support their child at home and to also talk about getting other services involved to support the child in school, a one to one for example. Everybody working with the child should enable them to achieve their full potential. The child’s confidentially should always be protected. No practitioner should leave any information, such as letters which are to be sent home to that child informing them of something, lying around. When considering the effects of poverty on children’s development the setting must take into account and respect their background and culture because this is a main value that the child has. By taking into account their background and culture, the child will feel better about themselves when you work with them, knowing you have a knowledge about their life outside of school, and knowing that you are treating them equal to all the other children in their class. This can be achieved by asking the child and their family questions about their culture, take an interest in what they have to say. Ask the practitioners about their background if they know anything.
