Americans stress the value of a healthy lifestyle, but do not bother to mention the cost that comes with it. The ignorance of the wealthy to the cost of healthy living is a reason as to why those who live in poverty are more prone to obesity. Poverty and obesity are linked directly. Poverty is a main cause obesity in low-income families and areas. Firstly, healthy food has been proven on many occasions to cost more than unhealthy food; secondly, healthy food is more perishable than junk food low-income families will be able to buy more food for the money that they have, hoping it is going to last their families a longer amount of time. Unhealthy food will be able to last a family a lot longer than healthy foods due to the longer lasting shelf life. Dina Spector states in the article “10 Foods That Will Last Forever In The Post-Apocalyptic World,” from businessinsider.com, discusses the shelf life of different foods. One of these foods being twinkies which in itself can last for thirty years. This is only one example of an unhealthy food that can last a family a long time, since food like this can last a long time families can buy lots of it and know it will be able to last. Also, the same article goes on to discuss the easy prepared ramen noodles which can last more than ten years (Spector). Not only are roman noodles quick and easy to prepare, they can last a family ten years or more. Just more reason for junk food to be more appealing to low-income people and families. Another leading contributor to obesity in low-income areas is Fast-food. Fast-food is more accessible in low-income areas and is cheaper than buying and preparing healthy meals. Therefore, “Low-income communities have greater availability of fast food restaurants, especially around schools,” (“Why”). There are fewer opportunities for families in low-income areas to get out and exercise. Generally speaking, there are fewer parks, green spaces, bike paths, and recreational facilities making it harder for families in this area to live active healthy lifestyles (“Why”). Since resources like parts are not available in low-income communities, there is less motivation for those to get out and be more active. The government should focus on building these recreational spaces to encourage physical activity and getting outside and being active as a way for everyone to live healthier lifestyles. Additionally, when resources such as parks are available in low-income areas they are often unappealing due to lack of natural features such as trees (“Why”). In order to motivate people who live in areas like these parks and trails should be appealing a look like something enjoyable. They should not look run-down and dangerous.
