In Ron Finley’s Ted Talk he goes over the problems of being in a food desert like L.A. in a comedic but serious fashion. He starts of by sharing two shocking statistics obesity is (Finley 2013) 8 times more prevalent in his neighborhood than beverly hills and that drivethrus in his town kill more people that drive-bys. He introduces that his neighborhood as South Central LA and then states all the government has down so far is change the the name the South LA, aka nothing. He then goes on the state that the problem is also the solution, food. He started planting fresh produce on the curb outside his house. Now even though the he was fixing the problem the government started taking steps to get him and his garden shut down. Instead of backing down he started planting even more gardens. He has a dream of a block of gardens where people of need can walk down and grab whatever fresh produce they need. The people of South Central LA were generally poor and black based off what I saw. In class we explored how income affects health and we also briefly went over nutrition. This video connects the two. Poor people struggle to acquire foods that most people would consider healthy. People have to pay a premium on healthy food which for many poor families just isn’t an option. The lack of nutritional value in the food that is made readily available to poor families leads to a deficit in health and an increase in obesity rates. The fast food companies almost seem to be targeting the poor families in a way that makes it very difficult for them to eat healthy.
