Did you know that Martinsburg switched from a countryside town to a bustling city in less than a century? In the story, McJobs, by Eric Schlosser, Eric verbalizes about how life in Martinsburg transmuted greatly over time. Martinsburg is a city in West Virginia that is now known as “the fastest growing city”. It used to be a town by the countryside and is now a boisterous city. The underlying messages about life in Martinsburg that Schlosser seems to be alluding at are that the opening of fast food restaurants in Martinsburg led to less stable jobs, overpopulation made it more city like, and it was overworking teenagers.
The book, Fast Food Nation, by Eric Schlosser, is about “The Dark Side of the All-American Meal”. Fast food in America is not as good as it seems. Most customers don’t know that by eating this food, they are putting their health at a serious risk. You only see the good side of things, but never the bad. Fast food chains are now in control.
The essay entitled, “Don’t Blame the Eater," written by David Zinczenko, is about fast-food companies and how they affect the consumer’s health. Zinczenko talks about how the consumer is suing McDonalds because their food is unhealthy and is making them fat. The idea of fast-food chains being responsible for health issues, obesity, and addiction, is absolutely true. Fast-food companies can be blamed because they do not inform the consumer the risks eating high calorie foods. Fast-food companies make money off of their advertisements to all ages, but especially targeting children, which is very clever.
In the book Fast Food Nation, the author, Eric Schlosser provides facts and evidence that fast food isn’t healthy and how they process the food is very bad. At first he starts off by showing every human eats fast food, even at the undercover Military Base in Colorado that is in a mountain. He says that, “almost every night, a Domino’s deliveryman winds up the lonely Cheyenne Mountain Road”, when they have nothing else to eat, says Mr. Schlosser(2). Once you start getting into the book you notice how he is comparing fast food to the Military Base. He goes off starting in the beginning how the first fast food restaurants started and how it led the people to end up making a fast food restaurant.
What We Eat by Eric Schlosser is an informative and deeply critical article on the growth of fast food industry and its implications on the American society. It presents a complicated angle about the industry focusing on the implication of employment, individual and household income, change in the service industry, changes in what people eat and how it is prepared and the positiveness of fast food in the modern world. Fast food places have led to Americans desiring more efficiency in their lives as well as changed many of the traditional values that Americans used to have, such as family and the role that youth play in the workplace. Its will effected on children and especially the teenagers. People spend money on fast food without thinking of spending it on something better like charity.
