The twelve Deities of Olympus “The imaginative Greeks created myths to explain just about every element of the human condition.” (“Greek Mythology.”) They told these myths and stories “ [beginning] with "Gaia: Mother Earth" and "Uranus: Father Heaven,"’ ( Pierce, Lonna) through fictional characters we know as gods. “At the center of Greek mythology is the pantheon of deities who were said to live on Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece.” (History.com) “The question of who the 12 Olympians are really depends on who is telling the story.” (Twelve Olympians) They hold the highest power of all the gods, and in some cases the most ruthless as well. Hera is the wife of Zeus and the mother of many of his children “[Zeus] official consort was his sister, Hera, who bore him Ares and Hebe.” ("Zeus.") She was one of the many women Zeus was romantically involved with and this made Hera furios. “A jealous wife, she fought constantly with Zeus and plagued his mistresses and children.” ("Hera.") Hera is very respected and is known to be one of the most honored goddesses. “She is usually represented as a majestic figure, fully draped, crowned with a wreath or diadem, and carrying a scepter. Frequently she is associated with the pomegranate, symbol of marital love and fruitfulness. The peacock was sacred to her,” “She was the protectress of women, presiding over marriage and childbirth, and frequently punished offending husbands.” ("Hera.") Next is Dionysus. He is frequently known as the god of wine. He is known to be lazy and is often found sleeping or having grapes fed to him. Dionysus is associated with the bull, serpent, tiger, ivy and wine. Lastly is Demeter. Demeter is the goddess of agriculture, harvest and fertility. She's the daughter of persephone whom Hades took away to the underworld because he was madly in love with.
