World Relations in the 1970s
As the decade of the 1970s began, the United States was involved in a multitude of foreign affairs revolving around their most trusted allies, as well as, events turning allies to enemies. To start, following after World War II, America’s relationship between Great Britain and Canada stayed strong. This bond held great importance in all aspects of foreign relations relating to: political, economical, and social standings. These three nations came together to support a struggling allie, Jamaica. As the early seventies came, Jamaica started to lean more towards the United States than Britain and Canada. While conflicts grew based on that, in 1972, Michael Manley came to power in Jamaica. Back in 1903 the original treaty was established. As of 1977, the Panama leader wanted to update the treaty's consensus. This resulted in the repeal of the 1903 treaty and its replacement of the Panama Canal Treaty of 1977 that would include a joint ownership between the United States and Panama of the Canal till 1999. However, this treaty was not first devised on peaceful terms during Gerald Ford’s early years as president. The Space Wars were the start of serious space discovery and science. The Soviet Union and the United States were the main contenders to these explorations. In 1970, Russia launched a rover, Lunokhod, to the moon as the first rover to effectively access many parts of the moon and to land on another world. The Soviet Union also sent two other rovers to Mars called Mars 2 and Mars 3, yet they were both unsuccessful. In a response, the year of 1971 was the time the United States started to send famous rovers to space as well. This would include Apollo 15 in July, but also Mariner 9 to Mars in May. These two, specific space explorations were both big steps in astronomy for the 1970s with regards to space travel and the understanding of other planets. While these launches are considered Space Wars, Mariner 9 actually accumulated cooperation between American and Soviet scientists which furthermore, calmed down national tensions regarding the nuclear conflicts between these two nations in this time period. (Great Events 1698-1708) Nevertheless, tensions were still high in the Middle East with the Mayaguez incident and the Egypt-Libya war. These are two military incidents that were between foes in the 1970s. The Mayaguez Incident was considered the attack on the American merchant ship, Mayaguez, and captured its crew.
