In 1969 during the height of the Cold War, the United States did what everyone thought was impossible, they landed a man on the moon. This was an amazing accomplishment for the time and showed the United States dominance in science. The race to the moon was driven entirely by the Cold War and was a race to see whether the United States or the then Soviet Union would land on the moon first. The whole world was watching the space race in hopes that someone could do something amazing. The space exploration unfortunately ended with the the Cold War. Without a government's support to go into space, nobody tried for many years until recently when people have started to try and get a person to Mars in the near future and getting space travel to be a thing again. Going to Mars and having space travel available for everyone seems so far out to most people; however, it will thankfully be here in the near future because private companies are looking to profit off of people's fascination with outer space. …show more content…

The Soviet Union sent six probes to Mars with the United States sending probes as well. The probes picked up soil samples and tested them while they were on the planet. The Soviet Union ended their space program with two failed attempts in 1988 ("Space Exploration"). The Space excitement has started once again and this century scientists have taken advantage of every window to send spacecraft to Mars with the exception of the window in 2009. The opening in 2020 is set to be one of the biggest as four rockets will be attempting to go to the planet that has people so interested now. The trips to Mars have delivered rovers that help examine the surface for future exploration (Skuse). NASA starting to get back into space exploration is exciting and I am hoping that they continue this trend, but speed up the rate at which they are sending more advanced rovers and
