The setting of the novel, 1984, by George Orwell, is set in Oceania, Victory Mansions. It’s dark and gloomy it seems as if it’ll be a scary book. Oceania is at war with Eurasia. This society is very weird and unusual. You are watched constantly. Winston is the main character and he’s not fond of the party and or it’s rules. He’s an older man, his hair is fair, he looks like he’s degrading away, he even has an ulcer on his ankle. He seems hateful and angry but he’s just tired of being controlled. He wrote the date April 4th 1984 but he wasn’t even sure if that was the date. In part two, Winston gets to know a girl named Julia. When he first saw her he couldn’t stand the sight of her, he hated her. But she ended up giving him a note, and they eventually meet up later on, they end up falling completely in love and start sleeping together. They don’t wanna separate but they may end up having too. In part three Winston has been arrested and is being held and tortured in room 101. O’Brien ends up being the person torturing him, Winston thought they were in the brotherhood together. They have secret spies everywhere too. “Of course we can’t afford to take chances 57”. To change Winston back and solve the problem, they torture him and force him to think different. They scare him, beat him and do multiple other things. “He loved Big Brother 298”. They changed him back to normal. Well normal to the party, even though it wasn’t really normal. They made him lose all of his feelings, he’s practically numb inside. The theme throughout the book is control or power. You're being watched and listened to constantly, unless there’s no telescreen but there everywhere. “Winston kept his back turned to the telescreen 3”. He thought it was safer. But if there’s no telescreen, there’s probably thought police watching you. “Now we can see you 222”. They’re always watching, don’t trust anyone or ever feel safe.
