Freedom to Speak Have you ever been in a situation where you wanted to tell someone something that happened but couldn’t for fear of reprisal? Well Winston Smith lived under the tyranny of fear due to the oppression of Big Brother in the 1984 story by George Orwell. In the story 1984, the outer party members like Winston are run by big brother. They are strictly forbidden to speak or think about finding the past and truth. Their philosophy is, “War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength” (Orwell 104). Winston states, “It was terribly dangerous to let your thoughts wander when you were in any public place or within range of a telescreen” (Orwell 62). This freedom is among the most important in Winston’s everyday life. If Winston was granted this freedom, he would be allowed to inform his fellow comrades of the shortening of everyday essentials the party is imposing, past events that they have changed, and ways of thinking the party is imposing upon them.. This freedom would help Winston make Oceania a better place. This freedom would help the future just as much as it would help the present. Furthermore, freedom of speech is the most important in the fact that it allows Winston to inform fellow comrades his opinions and information he has found out through his time at the Ministry of Truth. The ability to inform people in the present and write articles for those in the future will help make everyday lives better. The knowledge Winston has about things going on, is very beneficial. With this knowledge, his ability to write can prevent the terror and repression imposed by the party. This would ensure a better life for everyone.
