Winston, the main protagonist in the novel “1984” once said a society based on hate would not survive. This is a true fact; a society based on hate would indeed not survive. While Winston was being tortured, he told his torturer, O Brien, that a society that forbids friendship and does not permit love for anything besides big brother would not survive. The reason why this type of society would not survive lies evident throughout human history. Multiple nations around the world including Russia, China, France , and even the United States have al collapsed due to problems in those societies or unfavorable dictatorship. Winston knows this, and he believes that society will grow tired of constant suppression and unfair laws and turn into one large rebellion against big brother, much like how societies have in the near or distant past. O Brien however comes back with a common party belief that intoxication of power and the thrill of victory would serve as plentiful motivation for people to live on without either friendship or love for one another. If what O Brien said was true, this mindset would eventually diminish. People in their society would grow weary of constant battle with the other countries. If a society only allows hate for other countries, people would begin to crave the love and companionship they were once allowed to have for one another. This serves as another cause for people to rise against big brother. If big brother were to conquer the entire world, people would no longer have any reason to be full of hate. They would start to question themselves, “why are we always so hateful?” and “why shouldn’t I be happy?” this would lead to an uprising in people demanding laws that allowed them to display love and happiness, or they would overthrow the party and big
