1984s’ primary goal was to depict the horrifying possibilities of totalitarianism. Totalitarianism is when the government has complete control over everything and anything. As I read through this novel it was almost like a nightmarish world that author George Orwell envisioned it to be but to be seen through the eyes of protagonist, Winston Smith. He is kind of innocent in a world gone wrong, and through him, us readers are able to understand and feel the suffering that exists in the totalitarian society of Oceania. George Orwell intricately created this character that has proven to be a man of his own will but shifted to becoming shockingly unrecognizable.

As the Party’s message changes, all records that contradict it are altered. Winston is unhappy about the Party and its control over everything and wonders why they insist on having complete control over everything and the truth is what the Party says it is. Again by Winston having the urge to rebel, he illegally records his own experiences in a diary and becomes involved with a coworker named Julia. Julia is Winston’s love interest and ally who also works in the Ministry of Truth.There is one fundamental difference between them and that is that Winston's’rebellion is more about future generations of citizens in Oceania where as Julia’s rebellion is purely for her own desires. But, both characters share one main thing in common and that is that they both despise the Party and Big Brother. Julia’s demeanour is that of a zealous Party follower, but just under that thin surface is an individual with human desires and a willful spirit, which ultimately results in her being captured. want to break the rules just as much as Winston so they could be free from the Party’s control. Winston knows that he and Julia will eventually be caught and punished for getting involved in such a way that their lives are on the line, but Julia—who seeks pleasure—is
