I hope by the time I am 30 years old my life is led by opportunity not circumstance. Having such a tough background really opened my eyes on what real success is. It's not about the possessions but more about the knowledge you obtain. To receive my doctoral degree and to help others is the true definition of success.
At the age of 11 years old my father left my family including my mother and two brothers. Ever since that day I have seen my mother work double shifts totaling 15 hours on a daily basis. It tore me to see her at this tremendous amount of pain just to support my brothers and me. She at this time had to feed a household of 4 as well as pay bills. Watching my mother struggle with this amount of responsibility made me yearn for a solution. Not many 13 year olds stay up at night on worrying about family financial restrictions by every night from that point I was forced to. I got hired at a local dairy and I was pretty enthusiastic. Working eight hours a day was a lot of work for a young adolescent. Receiving my very first check was one of the most proud moment I can recall. Knowing that I was able to help with bills or even providing food was very accomplishing. My mother did not want me to spend my hard money on our financial problems. I will always remember her saying “we will make it through this month it's just going to be tough”. I step into the shoes of the man of the house. I might have not been the oldest but I understood the way we were living was not acceptable. Not only did we have problems with paying bills we had problems eating some night. I wanted the spot of the man of the house. I wanted the responsibility.
