Discussion 4.2: Your thoughts on the Socialization Within Schools
I grew up in a mid-size city in B.C. with a very diverse population. I was fortunate to attend a fantastic elementary school that prided itself on an inclusive education, way back in the early 80's. I was able to have my education experience mesh with many other children, some who were from different ethnic backgrounds and/or who lived with a disability. I believe the large diversity of my peers at such an early age led to a very positive social outcome. Empathy, problem solving, compassion, self-control and self-awareness are just a few of the benefits I gained from the socialization aspect of attending school. I mention this because with my first child I held on pretty tight and tried to structure everything that she did. I tried to mold her into what I thought she should be, how I thought she should act. Yeah, it was a learning curve for us both! I realized that this was a lot of work that didn't actually produce the results that I had hoped to see. When my second child came, I relaxed (was very tired) and started to realize that, with some guidance, they figured a lot of this stuff out themselves. By my fourth, I have been able to enjoy the process of watching them learn to be amazing, thoughtful, social human beings. I think this will be relevant to assisting other children in the classroom become viable and positive social students, as I have already learned that their environment, with a little adult guidance, will help guide them. I hope to be a valuable facilitator in helping children have a positive social experience by pairing a socially inept child with a socially adept child, identifying and acknowledging the strengths of all children, understanding social weaknesses and creating an environment in which the student is accepted. These can greatly enhance all children’s social abilities. Helping to create a sense of belonging within the classroom and school will be the beginning stepping stone to a positive
