It has been suggested by Beebe & Mottet (2016) that leadership and communication go hand in hand and that communication is a key factor in the success or potential downfall of an organizations foundation. Also, there are five basic principles of communication and they include awareness, nonverbal or verbal messages, listening, and adapting. Such principles are essential to providing a guideline for understanding how communication may be improved and utilized. In like manner, if a person has a problem with connecting to others, the five communication principles may be able to help, as they outline what works and what does not.

Effective communicators are typically able to encode and decode messages accurately by choosing the appropriate verbal symbols and words to form a message. It has further been indicated that it is important for employees to communicate verbally and to be able to speak, read, and write in at least two languages (Beebe & Mottet, 2016). It has been indicated that unspoken messages can communicate meaningful ideas that have more impact than words alone (Heathfield, 2017). Examples of nonverbal communication can be glances, blinking, gestures, and facial expressions. Being able to interpret nonverbal messages are also important skills to have in the workplace because it can help to increase productivity, increase job satisfaction, and encourage motivation (Heathfield, 2017). I experienced nonverbal communication during an interview by continuing to make eye contact with the person who was interviewing me and listening actively. I used the relating to others skill to attempt to develop a relationship and to leave a lasting impression. Principle four is listening and responding to others. Beebe & Mottet (2016), mention that besides sending messages, it is equally important for leaders to listen and receive messages from others. Listening can involve being considerate of the needs, desires, and goals of other people and it involves receiving messages as well as responding thoughtfully to what is being said (Beebe & Mottet, 2016).
