Curtis Jackson III was born in a rough neighborhood of Jamaica, Queens on July 6, 1975. He was raised by his grandparents after his mother was killed at a young age. As a young teen he turned to the streets and started dealing drugs. He was caught and sent to jail for a while. He was also shot nine times, once in the head. However, he then rose to stardom as a rapper and became known as 50 Cent. He had many challenges throughout his life, but he overcame them and became one of the world’s best rappers. 50 Cent faced many obstacles during his childhood. He was raised by his mother until the age of eight. She was a teen mom, having Curtis at the age of 15 (www.biography.com). To support herself and the baby, she became a drug dealer. When she was 23, she was brutally killed intentionally in an unexplained fire. Many of his lyrics, including the line, “Show no love because love can get you killed,” are about how he persevered after the challenge of his mother’s death. He then moved in with his grandparents. At the age of 12, he started dealing drugs and was caught at the age of 19 by an undercover cop. He was focused on rap and only rap. Curtis used many of the things he went through as lyrics for his music, especially the problems he faced in his life. Curtis stated “Seeing people as they are instead of what you think they should be, would mean having a greater sense of their motives,” (Greene 33). Curtis came across life threatening situations.
