The events that occurred on September, 11, 2001 were among the most catastrophic events in American history. The events of the day were summarized as 19 militants associated with the terror group al-Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and carried out targeted attacks in the United States. Out of the four planes, two of them were flown into the World Trade Center in New York, a third one into the Pentagon in Washington and the fourth one crashing off course into a field. The attacks resulted in the deaths of over 3000 people and the beginning of a soon to come American counter terrorism policy and the subsequent invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. As taught in the previous lessons, chaos theory is when tiny changes in initial conditions result in large impacts in final outcomes. This concept has been used to theorize that the events that happened in the 9/11 attacks were used to a final result that was far greater in the invasion of two countries and the extraction of Iraqi oil. Although the 3000 deaths that occurred as a result of 9/11 were certainly not justifiable that following war on terror lead to the estimated deaths of over two million people.
Another widely theorized conspiracy concept is the one of patternicity. Shermer in the article presents two types of patterns, of which type 1 believing there is a pattern when there isn’t any and type 2 believes there is no pattern when there is. This patternicity theory is applied to the attacks on 9/11 as it is believed that the United States used the attacks along with the claim of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq to invade and extract their goal which was believed by many conspiracy theorists to be oil.
