Depression in the Elderly: A Bibliographic Essay Depression is a recurring feeling of sadness and loss of interest. As of recently, depression has been a popular area of interest in the realm of mood disorders. This disorder affects over 15 million americans and has a notable presence with americans over 65. The symptoms differ in the elderly, and sometimes due to comorbidity, go undiagnosed. My interest in this topic stems from my willingness to explore issues that frighten me. I aspire to be an educator, so needless to say, the occupancy of this disorder in one of our most vulnerable populations is my motivation for further exploration. After thoroughly explaining the things that evoke depression. I typed in the search bar on Academic One File “stigma and depression “ I yielded some pretty interesting sources. Most of these sources were studies done in other countries. A study done by BMC Psychiatry, a health publication, states some interesting statistics that help make the stigma logical and insightful. This study entitled ”Predictors of depression stigma” communicate a study done in Australia of almost 6,000(2008). The study measures their individual and discerned interests while also assessing the things that evoke this mood disorder. Also, this study includes depression test comparison of young people and old people. The results suggest older people are more likely to have personal stigma compared to young people(2008). More results of this study show equates the depression rate with population of the elderly in Germany, and projected amount of elderly we’ll have in the coming future.
