A Brief Summary Of Hazel

Hazel is a very interesting person. She is 17 years old, and she is very ambitious. For instance, she is different from most people, in her own special way of course. She has thyroid cancer. Whoops! I guess she’s not that special. Just another average person who could possibly die at any second. But she’s different from most people. Because not everyone has cancer. Hazel can act very realistic though. She will not keep quiet about much of anything. For example, if someone says something that is offensive, but she has a different perspective, she will not keep quiet. She will make sure that her voice is heard, and she will make sure that her perspective is shown. On the other hand, Hazel doesn’t really get out much. She, mostly, stays at her …show more content…

If she runs, she could possibly faint in a matter of seconds. If she gets too excited, she can lose her breath, get light headed, and feel really nauseous. When people look at Hazel, they think that she can’t do much of anything--and their correct. She can’t do much of anything. There is this one part towards the beginning of the book where this little girl named Jackie approaches Hazel, and asks her about the nubbins from her cannula. Hazel acts totally chill about the entire situation, and I really like the way that she reacts. Hazel tells Jackie that the nubbins help her breathe because her “lungs, suck at being lungs.” Jackie, then, asks her, “Do you think they’ll help me breathe better?” (Green, 2012) Keeping in mind that Jackie is probably 6-7 years old, Hazel lets her try them on. With the amount of time in between from letting her put the nubbins on, to cleaning them, and putting them back on, Hazel felt a deep loss of oxygen. To be honest, I thought that Hazel was going to faint, because it seemed really scary for her to let a little girl try out the one object that keeps Hazel ALIVE. I really liked how she handled the situation though. She didn’t act like a complete jerk to a little girl. I probably wouldn’t have said, “No” to Jackie either. She just got a little action on how a girl with cancer uses a cannula to breathe/stay …show more content…

There will be no point to her life because she can’t do anything. She thinks that she probably won’t get a job if she even lives that long. Hazel, also, thinks that she will die rather soon. She knows that she will never live a full life where she will get married, and start a family, and create a life for herself. She don’t think that she could EVER live that long. Hazel, honestly, tries to live her life to the fullest. She doesn’t think about what is going to happen in the future, because she doesn’t think that she could make it that far, because she just likes to live in the spectacular now. She will never think about the consequences of doing certain things, because she could slide by with a cancer-perk. When she met Augustus, he drove her to his house. And he was a TERRIBLE driver. He told about his 3rd visit to the DMV and what the lady had said which was, “While your driving may seem dangerous, it is not considered to be unsafe.” (Green, 2012) Which they both saw as a Cancer-Perk. A Cancer-Perk is when a normally, healthy person, knows that a person with cancer is trying to get by at life, the healthy person lets them get away with doing something they probably couldn’t get away with if they were healthy. No cancer, equals no magic slide-by. Cancer, equals MULTIPLE slide-by’s and they mostly get to do whatever they want around a healthy person. Another way that Hazel and Gus had used their Cancer-Perks was when they
