This one summer, by Mariko Tamaki, is a story of a young girl named Rose Wallace who every summer visits Lake Awago with her family. Rose has spent summers at Lake Awago for as long as she can remember. There, she has a best friend named Windy. The two girls are inseparable, they do everything together from swimming to exploring to watching horror movies. The summer begins normally enough. Rose and Windy fall into their normal summer routines with their families. They swim, cook out, go for walks, explore, collect pebbles, shells, glass, and other small items. They talk about their summers, about how they both want to grow boobs, and about their adventures from past summers. One day, as Alice works in the kitchen, her husband, Evan, suggests for her to take a break to come spend time with him and enjoy the vacation. However, she rather continues to work in the kitchen and responds, “just let me do this my way” (Tamaki, 2014, p.16). Although, Evan attempts to encourage Alice to have a good time despite the negative situation, Alice prefers to keep herself distant. She behaves in the same manner with Rose. In one instance Rose hangs to her mom’s arm and asks to go swimming together. Alice doesn’t bother to take the invitation into consideration but instead yells, “Rose! Don’t hang!” (Tamaki, 2014, p. 16). When Rose asks again to go swimming Alice tells her, “no…maybe later” (Tamaki, 2014, p.43). Alice not only distances herself from her husband but from Rose as well. Alice attempts to cope with her depression but instead creates space between herself and her family, which makes her appear as uninvolved and detached. Alice and her husband, Evan, continually argue. It is difficult for them to communicate with one another as they try to understand one another’s
