Hurricane winds can reach above 157 mph.” (nbc.noaa.gov). Hurricanes are harmful natural disasters that can wreck whole cities and sometimes trap people scrambling for their lives. In the book “ Terror at Bottle Creek” by Watt Key Cort, the main character gets caught in a category three hurricane along with two neighbor girls Liza and Francie. The hurricane leaves them stranded in the swamps of Alabama and Cort and the girls must rely on Cort's survival skills, knowledge of the swamp, and character traits to keep them alive. In one part of the book, Francie gets caught on the dog's leash and dragged to the water where Cort has to get her. “I'm going down there” (Key 80) Here Cort Runs into the Unknown Storm to save Francie. Though Cort's life was not endangered, Francie's survival relied on Cort to be brave and come to retrieve her. Later, Cort had to swim away from the mound in gator-infested waters to get help. “I could swim fast but rusty and the Alligators could swim faster” (Key 150) In this quote Cort is about to swim away from the mound to get help. He knows he can swim gently and the gators won't get him, however, he still needs to be brave to accomplish such a feat. In the world, bravery is essential in making favorable decisions. In the story, the girls rely on Cort to be leading to make certain they will all survive.
