The throughout our lifetimes, it is our parents who have the greatest influence upon the persons we become. However, when a cash arises over a difference in perspectives, which may include money, friendships, and careers, this may cause irreparable damage to relationships. In the short story A Cap for Steve, there was a father and son relationship. Dave Diamond, the father, was a poor, quick-tempered man who knew the true value of money, and knew how to make every dollar count. His son Steve was a shy twelve year old boy, who had a true passion for baseball. Dave and Steve did not see eye to eye on many things, which put a strain on their relationship. Like every young boy does, Steve looked up to his father from the very beginning, overtime his father's actions awed him. During the situation with Mr. Hudson, Dave knew deep down that Steve was counting on him, however in the end Steve’s hope, pride and contentment ended up getting destroyed. Anna, and Steve made it clear to Dave how important the cap was, but from the day of the Phillies game, dave was reluctant to realize that. Steve had told his father that he never wanted to be like him, and that was when the obliviousness faded away and Dave finally realized the significance of the situation and how hurt Steve was in the end. Throughout this short story Steve faced many disappointments, all of them having Mr. Hudson involved. For instance, the author mentioned that Steve “ought to know the value of money” because of how influenced he was by his father. Even though this may have been accurent, when Steve was in the same room as Mr. Hudson and his father, he saw how much more power, and how much can mean so little. The power of authority was demonstrated and Steve was startled from the start. In situations all over the world, it is always the rich men who win, and that was exactly what was shown to Steve. This can happen anytime you can be ten, thirty, or even sixty, it does not matter. Dave was a man, with a wife, child and a job, Steve was the bigger person throughout this story, teaching his father the true meaning of life. From the beginning there was a strain between Dave and Steve. Steve needed help from his father, he needed someone to believe in him and support him, unfortunately dave was not aware of that until the end. Steve was called childish, careless and his dad was agitated with the person Steve had became. Their relationship grew substantially at the end because Dave gave Steve a chance, dave realized that he had hurt his son in so many ways, and so he changed his approach. Dave’s apology led to them to them talking, and deciding that they would spend more quality time together, Dave reached out to Steve with the idea that he could be his baseball coach, and that they could use the money from Mr. Hudson to buy new equipment. The atmosphere of this story went from dark to light, and there was finally some excitement.
