I am interested in attending the Marist Criminal Justice summer program because I want to learn more about the many careers in the criminal justice field. A criminal justice-related career is typically displayed on television on shows like “Bones” and “NCIS.” These shows probably do not accurately portray what a job in the criminal justice field is really like because they are meant for entertainment. I’m hoping to learn more about the realistic side of criminal justice in the Marist program. What interests me the most in this field is Forensic Science, the process of solving the crime and how forensic scientists and all of the other law enforcement agencies work together.
“It’s not the destination that matters. It’s the change of scene.” (Brian Eno) This quote by Brian Eno praising the value of the outside world and his surroundings. One career that is worth pursuing is a CSI agent/ Forensic science technician.
Forensic Science is the career field I am interested in. I would enjoy being a forensic science technician because of my interest in mysteries and figuring things out. This career choice is the right choice for me because I would only need a Bachelor’s degree, it would be work I enjoy doing, and I would make an exceptional salary. Forensic science technicians aid investigations by collecting and testing evidence. Many technicians spend time either in a laboratory or on the field in crime scene investigation.

At age ten I would love to sit with mom and watch Criminal Minds astonished as to what makes people do what they do. The show would create such a wide set of emotions in me that I still do not quite understand. So many questions brewed inside me that would not be entirely answered, or at least to me. I desire to achieve the necessary knowledge to be able to provide not only myself, but others answers by becoming a forensic psychologist.

The life of a homicide detective is not as glamorous as TV shows portray it to be. Becoming a homicide detective takes time. The minimum education requirement is at least a bachelor’s degree. Criminal justice is the recommended career field. After you meet the education requirements you must go through a police academy or other training institution before you are eligible to work.
One choice from the Law Enforcement area of this field would be a CSI. This is probably one of the most well-known jobs because of all the television shows. However, these shows do not portray the crime scene process to all its truth. A Crime Scene Investigator is hired as a police officer or civilian. They are the ones who recognize crime scenes, documents the scenes and process any evidence they have gathered and send it to the crime lab.
Getting a job in forensics takes the ability to incorporate all of the scientific strengths learned and the love for solving crimes. Giving expertise on legal activities also plays a major role in investigating and solving misdemeanors(“Discover Careers in Forensic Science”). Many occupations in forensics can be sometimes labeled as morbid or gruesome. Some of these careers may include, forensic crime scene investigators, coroners, anthropologists, and pathologists(forensic medical examiners)(Palmer). These professions salaries can range anywhere from 50,000 to over 200,000 a year(Kaelin).
Psychology consistently ranks as one of the top careers in terms of job outlook and job satisfaction. Clinical psychologists are the psychologists in charge of analyzing, identifying, treating, and preventing mental disorders and issues. They work in private practice, or state-run hospitals, or an academic environment and study psychological such as schizophrenia and depression.
