Introduction
This paper will describe how to obtain a job as a correctional senior case analyst with the Department of Public Safety. The Department of Public Safety is the parent organization for all of the prisons in North Carolina. This paper describes why this job interests me, what the requirements for this position are, and what the starting pay is. Also I will discuss values that are important to me and discuss how these values match or do not match the job. I will identify skills and traits that I possess and assess whether they match the job. I am interested in becoming a correctional senior case analyst. A senior case analyst within the Department of Corrections in North Carolina oversees other case analysts and ensures that the security level and program recommendations for inmates who are coming into the prison system are appropriate for each individual. The process involves reviewing the files of each inmate after they have been interviewed by a case analyst and what their recommendations are for programs and level of security facility the inmate should be sent to within the North Carolina prison system. Senior case analysts also oversee the psychological and intellectual testing of inmates; these results are also used in placing the inmates within the prison system and deciding which programs would be beneficial to the individual. Examples of programs available are Alcoholic’s Anonymous, GED classes, Community Work Programs, and Transitional programs.
I find this job particularly fascinating due to the high level of analytical skilled needed and the ability to work well with other people in order to achieve the common goal of a safer society. I originally wanted to assist families within my community, but quickly learned that many of the parents were in jail or prison. The Department of Public Safety requires that applicants for the correctional case analyst position have a minimum of a four-year degree in human services and one-year of testing or interviewing experience (North Carolina Office of State Human Resources 2017). Skills that are required are effective oral and written communication skills, objectivity, and the ability to make evaluate responses given during an interview. This is an entry-level position where one must spend several years in before applying for the Senior Case Analyst position.
