How the Grinch Stole Christmas and A Christmas Carol are two very similar stories. In the stories A Christmas Carol and How The Grinch Stole Christmas, there are two characters who are a good example of this. A Christmas Carol is a story about a grumpy old man named Ebenezer Scrooge who only cares about money and needs to be taught a lesson. The story teaches a very good lesson, and modern authors still draw from it’s storyline. They also draw from the lessons it teaches while people read it.
When people are asked to name some of the classic Christmas movies, they are quick to say movies such as Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer (1964), Frosty the Snowman (1969), and How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000), but they forget to mention the dismal, chilling The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993). But why is that, doesn’t Tim Burton still show the joy that Christmas brings, but in a slightly new perspective? This is not the case for Charles Dickens’ character Ebenezer Scrooge from A Christmas Carol and Frank Capra’s creation of a character, George Bailey from It’s a Wonderful Life. Both protagonists are beloved characters, but have drastic similarities and differences. Ebenezer Scrooge and George Bailey are best compared by their outlook on life, time spent with the spirits, and each character’s transformation in the story.
You may often come across the Christmas Carol story in many different forms but the play and movie are the most common. Say for example, the play written by Charles Dickens. This play takes place in various places in the city of London. The Christmas Carol play comes to life on Christmas Eve in the winter of 1843.(Dickens, 1) Ebenezer Scrooge is the main character who has absolutely no respect for Christmas at all. Matter of fact, he despises this merry holiday which is called to be the conflict of the play but Bob Cratchit, who works for him, is just filled with the thought of it.

In the movie and the book they had the same types of lessons learned. The difference is that in the movie Scrooge had a dog while in the book, it never mentions that Scrooge had a dog.
The Christmas Carol is a great and popular story, people have made movies and plays about it, though the play can be more accurate. The movies can be very accurate to the actual story. Although it is not a very long play there are many different things going on. The story overall has a great message to it. As in, never say that Christmas lame or not worth it.
Similarities and Differences of the Play and Movie A Christmas Carol Greed is a trait nobody should have and one man’s life was ruined by it. “Bah Humbug!”is a famous quote from the astounding play, A Christmas Carol the story of a rich, old, mean man named Ebenezer Scrooge whose life was turned around. The play was later copied in a movie in 1984 and the movie shows many similarities and differences to the play. Most of the similarities and differences appear when the three ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future visit him and change his life for the better.
After Marley warns him not to end up like himself, and informs him that he will be visited by three ghosts, the first ghost arrives in Scrooge’s home. This is the the Ghost of Christmas Past. The spirit is dressed in a bright white tunic and is holding branch of luscious green holly. The ghost shows him scenes from when he was younger. These scenes make a massive impact on Scrooge.
The setting of the movie is the first obvious difference that can be seen. The movie was set in New York City, New York in 2000 while the play was set in Elsinore, Denmark in the late middle ages. This greatly affects the way the movie is viewed because it is essentially an entirely different world. In the movie there are video cameras, cars, phones and skyscrapers, all things that obviously weren’t around during Shakespeare’s time. Even if the movie and the play had been based in the same year, the story still would have been slightly different.
Compare and Contrast A Christmas Carol is full of many twists and turns, and has been written in many different versions. Writers have taken artistic liberties and have added or taken away to the beloved Christmas story to make it their own. No two versions are going to be exactly similar, and most definitely are going to have many differences. The play and the movie both follow the basic plotline of the classic novel, A Christmas Carol.
The movie has a different story structure. Unlike the book the movie has some flashbacks. Some differences are that she walks in oh the man in the beginning. The tells his wife in the movie that he is having an affair with another woman. The story clerk does not offer the woman cheesecake in the book.
In the play A Christmas Carol Mr scrooge is visited by jacob marley, his old but dead partner. He tells scrooge to get his act up or he will turn out to be like him. He marley told he would be visited by three ghost.(Dickens 8) When the clock strikes he is visited by the ghost of christmas past he shows scrooge his past from when he was a little boy to when he was an apprentice at a warehouse. Where he meet his first love.

Another difference would be the way the short stories were ordered. In the book, the stories were told in no perceptible order, making it hard to remember who is whose daughter/mother etc. The movie begins with a party which all the characters attend, and the stories are disclosed as the character is thinking about it. The mother and daughter’s stories are staged after one another. The movie allows for a more natural way of telling the story, and makes it easier to remember the characters and associate mothers with daughters.
