Capital Punishment In 1972, a man by the name of John Wayne Gacy tremendously impacted the state of Illinois. From the time of 1972 through 1978, Gacy murdered at least 33 young men and boys. Using tricks and a personal business, he lured these men into his home and committed unspeakable crimes. Afterward, the corpses were placed into a crawl space where each young individual would lie as their families searched, hoping to bring their young boys home. As a result of the 33 murders, Gacy was sentenced to death. Was the jury’s decision of permitting the use of the death penalty correct, or should this man have had the opportunity to live and serve life in prison? Arguments revolving around both sides of the death penalty are debated by many people today. Individuals supporting the death penalty argue that it is needed for deterrence, it provides closure for families, and it is considered constitutional, while those who are against it argue that it does not act as a deterrent, it does not provide closure for the families, and it is unconstitutional. In the article, “The Impact of Reviving the Federal Death Penalty,” Craig Trocino, director of the Innocence Clinic at the University of Miami School of Law, stated “The death penalty is not a deterrent despite the claims of its proponents. In fact, since 1990 states without the death penalty have consistently had lower murder rates than states that have it” (Jones Jr par. 12).
