Many genres have their own type of origin of where that genre all began. “Today's rap music reflects its origin in the hip-hop culture of young, urban, working-class African-Americans, its roots in the African oral tradition, its function as the voice of an otherwise underrepresented group, and, as its popularity has grown, its commercialization and appropriation by the music industry.” Two popular rappers in today’s rap industry are Jermaine Lamarr Cole (J.Cole) and Aubrey Drake Graham (Drake). Cole is the better rapper because he’s a storyteller, he motivates, and he’s a very skillful lyricist. Drake is more of a pop artist than a rapper and he only ever raps about one thing: himself. His raps are based off of real life struggles that everyone one day would pass through. In Cole’s music his flows are on point, when he captures you, he doesn’t release your consciousness, he takes you to faraway lands, unlocks your mind, and drills you endlessly before returning you back to Earth. That’s pure magic using rap as a medium. What gives Cole the slight edge is the presence of individual concept like “Lost One’s” where he tells a gripping tale from three viewpoints. The amount of lyrics he spit has a lot of wisdom in it. He packs heaps knowledge in his lyrics as well. In Cole’s music he gives off a lot of strength with his motivation to his listeners that makes you want to aim for success and to keep going and to reach your goals. He let’s you know that you can do anything no matter what others say and no matter what people do. He uses experience as a way to motivate the listeners as well.
