Just picture this family that I am about to describe to you: a grandmother speaks to her son and he pretends that she doesn’t even exist, the wife of the son isn’t any better and ignores the grandmother as well, and the children are being naughty due to lack of control and respect. It seems as though the parents are not fulfilling their family responsibilities and this has affected the lives of the children significantly. Throughout history, even in 1953 when Flannery O’ Connor wrote “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, dysfunctional families have become the norm in society. Dysfunctional families encompass misbehaved children, unconcerned parents, and a self-absorbed grandmother.

Right from the beginning, John Wesley, a young and stocky boy, responds roughly to his grandmother and tells her “If you don’t want to go to Florida, why dontcha stay at home?” (O’Connor). When I read this story, I couldn’t believe this was happening. I wondered if that was going to be his only outburst, but a little later he says “Tennessee is just a hillbilly dumping ground” (O’Connor). A child backtalk’s to adults because this exemplifies their way of exploring the world through language and to test the limits of those in charge (Mock, Mark). This can be corrected; however Bailey and his wife make no effort in showing them to speak in an appropriate way. Another characteristic of a misbehaved child exists when they challenge their authorities. John Wesley’s sister, June Star, represents a prime example of a child who likes to defy those in control. Right after John Wesley finishes talking, June Star tells her grandmother that she always goes where they goes and wouldn’t stay at home even if they gave her a million bucks.
