“The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” written by Katherine Anne Porter, is about a grandmother who is in denial that she is about to die. And “A Good Man is Hard to Find” written by Flannery O’Connor, is about a family that goes to visit family in Tennessee but are brutally murdered before they get there. These two stories share many similarities and differences in both the characters, and conflict.
In both "A Good Man is Hard to Find" by Flannery O 'Connor and In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, the author asserts the idea that villainy spawns from the villain’s less than ideal circumstances of his past. In the novel In Cold Blood, Capote presents Perry as a villain shaped by the unfortunate experiences of his childhood. The first instance of these experiences can be seen in Tex’s letter to the Kansas State Parole Board. Tex describes Perry’s early childhood as rather light-hearted, up until the point when his mother “wanted to go to the City and live a wild life” (Capote 126).
Today, I’ll be introducing you to a couple of foreshadows in the story, “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” by Flannery O’Connor. For those that don’t know what foreshadow means; it means to give hints to what’s going to happen later on in the story. Also, I’ll be explaining the tension and suspense in the foreshadows. The First foreshadow I’ll be talking about is when the grandma didn’t want to go to Florida.
and they are all planning a trip to Florida. Although it has been decided that they are going to Florida, the grandmother is frustrated and tries to convince her son and his family that they should go to Tennessee instead since more family lives there and there are sights to see there. She also argues that going to Florida would only put the family in danger as there was a serial killer on the loose who goes by the name of “Misfit”. This, in itself, already raises a red flag for readers since they just so happen to be travelling to a place where a serial killer is running loose. Despite the grandmother’s protests against their trip to Florida, they all get in the car and begin their journey.
The story begins with a seemingly normal plot about a family’s road trip to Florida, and a stubborn Grandmother who stirs up trouble along the way. Before the trip, the Grandmother becomes fearful of meeting a recently escaped convict, the Misfit, and begs to take a trip to Tennessee instead of Georgia (O’Connor 177). However, the family believes that she is having irrational fears and proceeds with the trip as planned. After a while, the the talkative Grandmother remembers an old house she one visited, and manipulates the family into going. However, the house turned out to be in Tennessee, not Georgia, and upon realising the mistake the startled Grandmother jumped up and disturbed her bag and basket that the cat lye in (O’Connor 182).
The bizarre twists of fate of “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’ Conner leaves the reader perplexed and reveled to a preconceived ending of good prevailing against evil this gives the story its unique and arousing end which most stories do. O’ Conner uses literary proficiency such as foreshadowing, symbolism, eccentric characters, In “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” The Grandmother character is brought to light as self-centered and manipulative. She tries to do everything in her favor and sway situations to fit her own interest regardless of other characters. She tries to manipulate Bailey not to go to Florida but Tennessee, seizing at every chance to change Bailey’s mind, “seize” isn’t just a casual attempt.
The grotesque psychopathic nature of the characters in Flannery O’Connor’s, “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” ironically shows how a good man does not truly exist through the revelation and proclamation of what characteristics a good man possess. In the story The Misfit shows characteristics of a psychopath by escaping prison and killing an innocent family. However, The Misfit isn’t the only character in the short story to show psychopathic tendencies. The grandma also shows some characteristics of a psychopath because she does not care or show remorse for her family who was brutally murdered

The man is called the Misfit, he has been branded with that name after he supposedly killed his own father. The story gives way of foreshadowing the unfortunate ending in several instances. The first one is when Grandmother Bailey is trying to change the destination of the trip by showing her son the newspaper article about the man that escaped from the penitentiary. "Here this that calls himself The Misfit is aloose from the Federal Pen and headed toward Florida and you read here what it says he did to these people. Just you read it”
The story focuses on a family that is going on a vacation to Florida. The family, accompanied by the Grandmother and her cat, are planning on driving to Florida when they hear about someone who broke out of jail. Bailey, one of the family members and father of the family, says, “The Misfit is aloose from the Federal Pen and headed toward Florida” (53). This statement is a use of foreshadowing for events that will follow; the family will encounter the killer when traveling to Florida (“Flannery O’Connor and the Symbol”). The beginning of the short story seems to have religion playing a positive role in the family.

These events are easily found in "A Good Man is Hard to Find" because the violence takes place casually at the end of the story, the murderer doesn 't try to be sneaky about it. At the beginning of the story the grandmother talks the family into visiting east Tennessee and not Florida by telling them that a dangerous inmate named "The Misfit" had escaped and is headed to Florida; "The Misfit is aloose from the federal Pen headed toward Florida and you read here what it says he did to these people.
