A Midsummer Night's Dream: A Comparison And Titania

In A Midsummer Night’s Dream written by William Shakespeare, there are two main power couples. At the beginning of the play, Theseus returned from conquering the Amazons, who are warrior women. In return, he is about to marry the Amazon queen, Hippolyta. Theseus and Hippolyta are the king and queen in Athens. He is a responsible and strong leader, along with someone who upholds the law. Theseus is a law enforcer, so his word is the law. At the beginning of the play, Oberon and Titania are also a ruling couple of the supernatural in the land of fairies and have full access to the world of humans. Oberon is the fairy king and Titania is the fairy queen. There are several similarities and differences between the two power couples.

Both couples occasionally disagree with some of their problems but eventually, they find a solution leading them to resolve their problems and letting them go. There were times when the power couples had problems. For instance, Oberon and Titania both are at odds with each other due to the Indian prince. According to Oberon “the little boy is a changeling, Titania stole from an Indian King”(2.1.23; 22). Oberon’s intentions are to turn the Indian prince into his errand boy/attendant but Titania relinquishes Oberon’s efforts. Oberon eventually discovers a plan to grab the changeling when Titania is distracted in love. Oberon tells Puck to fetch a flower with magic love juice. “Fetch me that flower; the herb I shew’d thee once. The juice of it on sleeping eyelids laid will make or man or woman madly dote upon the next live creature that it sees.”(2.1.175-178) Once Puck fetched the flower Oberon tells him to apply the magic love juice to Titania’s eyes when she is sleeping, so the first thing that appears in front of her, she will fall in love with. Titania eventually falls in love with Bottom who has an ass’s head, and Oberon convinces Titania to handover the changeling and reverses the spell on her.
