Throughout the years, authors have written about love in many endearing ways. There is the love of a puppy, the love of money, the love of a mother, the love of a friend, and the passionate love that is only expressed to a lover. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, many different forms of love are presented to the reader, from the love of a friend to the love’s truest form, romantic love. One of the most prevalent forms of love in A Midsummer Night’s Dream is romantic love. There are many different examples of romantic or true love in this play. One of the most obvious examples would be the love between Hermia and Lysander. Their love is what the story is based off of. We see this when Hermia is faced with the decision to leave Lysander, or potentially die, and she chooses to take the chances and be with him. Their love was true so they were willing to take any chance just to make it work out. To reassure their love for eachother, Lysander told Hermia “The course of true love never did run smooth…” (1.1.134). He says this right when Hermia if forced to leave him or practically die. They didn’t care how many bumps were in the road, because they believed that true love doesn’t run smooth. Since they loved themselves so much, it would all work out. The most obvious way that this is presented is in the workmen to Bottom. Even though Bottom was a little bit loud, obnoxious, and spoke very highly of himself, the workmen still loved him. This becomes clear when they are waiting to present their play to Theseus, and Bottom hasn’t returned.
