This PSA was created by the National Wildlife Fund to raise awareness about global warming and how they believe that it is bad. Since they are against global warming and the melting ice caps they want to convince people to follow the same stance. To bring this message forward they use a variety of rhetorical devices including the clear use of the loaded word. They main quote that makes sense of the PSA and ties it together is “When the ice caps melt, so will he.” The use of loaded words such as “Melt” and “He” leave marks in human emotion as humans tend to remember words and not points meaning that once the viewer is gone they can remember that PSA as they just remember the point.

For example, instead of helping these young people to express the emotions they are feeling over the deaths of friends or coping with intense stresses and difficult situations, The Program's very existence is pushing these teens to bury their feelings, creating more problems. "There is a pamphlet for The Program sitting next to our phone in the living room --.... But to me that paper is like a threat, always reminding me of the next step if I slip up. So I don't slip up.

According to “Teen Suicide Statistics,” suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15-24-year-olds. With this in mind, Building Life and the Suicide Awareness Voices of Education made the “Empty Seat” PSA, in an attempt to combat not only suicide, but to focus on suicide among teens. To reach this point, a literal and symbolic approach to purpose, the use of a general, yet specified audience, effective appeals to ethos and logos, and a fundamental appeal to pathos were used in the “Empty Seat” PSA. Though the purpose of this PSA is quite obvious, simple aspects of it are used to emphasize its importance, and catch the viewer’s attention.
“The one place of connection that has the potential to be most stable for all children, teens, and adults alike is the family environment.” Teen suicide has many reasons behind it, some people may not know. Based on Judith Peacock’s research on the subject, “No one is sure why more teens today are taking their own life” (Peacock pg.1). More suicides have been happening without explanation…. Or maybe the answer has always been under our noses.
As of 2015, 5 in 100,000 girls and 14 in 100,000 teenagers commit suicide (Lewis). Teenagers are becoming more vulnerable and schools seem to be taking no notice. The National Institute of Mental Health states that there “are as many as 25 attempts of suicide to every one that is actually committed” (Eco Child’s Play). Suicides can be prevented by treatment of the illness.
The article “Confessions of a Drug-Addicted High School Teacher” by Jason Smith recounts the weekly experiences of an esteemed teacher in a conservative pocket in North California. Smith, while managing his student and superior’s complications is slowly deteriorating behind his own drug addiction issues. The main strategy used by Smith could be considered the credibility appeal; he attempts to reach his purpose by showing himself as trustworthy. Smith’s use of this rhetorical device in his writing effectively engages the reader interest and urges readers to consider how the teaching job is much more than just teaching, while his use of specific examples shows his familiarity of the subject and thus his ability to present a compelling argument.
