Ron Finley and Speech Structure Ron Finley’s speech on the lack of access to healthy food in South Los Angeles is one of the best I’ve seen. In his Ted Talk, he immediately captures the attention of the audience with his sense of humor and describes the problems in the city and his solution in a very well organized, memorable manner. Like his intro, his conclusion is effective and memorable. We can learn many speaking techniques from Finley. Structure, Organization, and Effectiveness Finley opens his speech with a joke about the city’s lack of effort to fix the healthy food famine. This immediately captures the audience’s attention and sets up its purpose and tone. This pattern is very effective for his topic as he’s very clearly stating a problem with his city and his solution. Because of this great choice of structure, Finley’s ideas are very well organized and memorable. You can always tell what point he’s making, even before he says it. Even when I zoned out throughout the video, I could tell what he had been saying, what he was currently saying, and the next piece he was most likely going to pick up on. Just like the rest of his speech, Finley’s conclusion does its job and does it well. His ending is effective, relevant to the rest of his speech, and leaves the audience with something to think about without introducing new points. He doesn’t ramble, but he doesn’t finish abruptly, and he is completely unapologetic about his speech and his humor. We can learn many things from Finley’s beautifully organized speech. For example, analyze the situation. He’s very aware of his audience and that’s why he’s able to make them laugh over and over while still taking himself seriously. He shows us how to make extremely effective introductions and
