In “Hunters in the Snow” main characters Tub, Frank, and Kenny are out hunting in a forest. After ‘joking’ about pretending to shoot Tub, Kenny himself is shot by Tub. The short story “Hunters In The Snow” by Tobias Wolff is an example of commercial fiction and “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell is an example of literary fiction because of their traits and how they are written. Although “Hunters In The Snow” is commercial fiction, and “The Most Dangerous Game” is literary fiction, both have some aspects of the others type. Even though “The Most Dangerous Game” is an example of Literary Fiction it has a lot of action.
Character Development in “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” In this short story “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” by Katherine Anne Porter, the story takes place in Granny Weatherall’s bedroom. Granny is sick in bed being visited by her children, Cornelia, Jimmy, and Lydia. In this story, the author develops Granny’s character through her hard life, her marriage and family, and the jilting.
We are all destined to die one day, we are all only here for a period of time, for a purpose and after we have fulfilled our purpose God takes us. The short story “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall,” by Katherine Anne Porter discusses an older lady known as Granny Weatherall who is very sick and on her deathbed. Katherine Anne Porter does a great job in describing what it is like to be on the deathbed since Katherine herself was once in that situation. Katherine Porter is so detailed in the way she describes Granny’s last days of life and I can imagine this is what it is like for those who die of old age. We have all seen someone we loved pass away and it is a very hard thing to see.
Both are dark and sad stories. The two main characters start out happy and joyful, and eventually become pessimistic and isolate themselves from society. In "A Rose for Emily" the townspeople where so busy judging and gossiping they did not realize how lonely she was. So lonely that she was crazy and had a dead corpse in her house for many years.
A rose for Emily Starts off with Emily Grierson's funeral, later on in the story it goes back to show Emily’s childhood and her relationship between her abusive father and her. In the short story, Faulkner uses irony, metaphors and other literary devices to show how emily is mistreated by her father, as well as her loneliness. After her father’s death, she doesn’t want to accept it which puts her at a mental breakdown. Even though she had an awful relationship with her father, when he passed away she still couldn’t believe his death which only made her isolate herself, almost depressed. People thought she was getting ill.
The story “A Rose for Emily” is a horror story. In the story, there is death and fear. The story is a genre of horror that has ancient origins with roots in folklore and mystery, focusing on death in a person. A Rose for Emily is a horror story because Emily, who is mentally ill, is a woman whom many people are afraid of. She is a very mysterious woman who also has a strong smell because of the dead body she had in her house.
Many modernists were inspired by the Civil War, WWI, and the Great Depression to introduce a new theme into literature. This theme consisted of the stream of conscious, and hopelessness. A short piece that has both of these themes is “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall,” by Katherine Ann Porter. Porter’s short story compared to many other modernistic pieces during the modernist time period. A terrific comparison to this story is the story “Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner, which also has both the stream of conscious and hopelessness as themes.
On April 1865 General Lee surrendered his army of Northern Virginia and the American Civil War came to an end. This marked the beginning of the reconstruction era and a time when the northern social structure began to have major influences on southern societies. The South, however, struggled to retain the social structure they took for granted in the Antebellum period. In “A Rose for Emily”, Faulkner uses the townspeople, Miss Emily, and Miss Emily’s home to show this pervading idealistic society of the Old South, within the reformative society of the New South.
“A Rose for Emily” is a unique short story that keeps the reader guessing even though its first sentence already reveals the majority of the content. William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” is the epitome of a work that follows an unconventional plot structure and a non-linear timeline, but this method of organization is intentional, as it creates suspense throughout the story. William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” follows an unusual plot structure, which creates an eccentric application of suspense to a short story. Throughout the story, there are no clear indications of standard plot structure in each section, such as intro, climax, and denouement. Instead, there are sections, which are not in chronological order, that describe a particular conflict or event, which in turn creates suspense, as each conflict builds upon each other to make the reader question the overall context and organization of the story.
“A Rose for Emily” was written in 1931 by William Faulkner. The story is about a woman named Emily Grierson, a woman who lived in the South and was deeply admired by the community, but it starts off as her funeral. The townspeople placed her on a pedestal and viewed her as “a tradition, a duty” because of her father’s standing in the community before he died. The town feels the need to protect, and watch out for Emily the way they would anybody else but she prevents people from getting “too close” to her. The townspeople bear responsibility for what became of Emily because of their absence to acknowledge the Southern compassion she deserved from her father’s death and the negligence of enforcing the laws because of who she was.
The story "A Rose for Emily¨, tells the years of Emily´s life after her father's death and the towns reaction and thoughts based on her actions and events in her life. After her father's death she isolated herself from the whole town and rejected every man in the town.
The short story by William Faulkner entitled “A Rose for Emily” is the best short story from the reading assignments this week due to the authors use of characters, setting, plot, and symbolism in a manner that draws the reader in and makes the reader want to know more about the events leading up to the death and funeral of Emily Grierson (Kirszner and Mandell, 2012). As a reader you want to understand the sequence of occurrences that lead us to this event. Due to the events not being communicated in chronological order, the reader is forced to try to put the events together in a way that makes sense. Drawn in from the beginning, I wanted to know more about what got us to this place and the people and factors that result in this story standing the test of time. As I read the story, I also wanted to understand and appreciate the meaning of the title, “A Rose for Emily” (Kirszner and Mandell, 2012, p. 143).
In William Faulkner’s, “A Rose for Emily,” the historical context is important to understand. In order to fully comprehend the short story there must be some sort of understanding about the time period in which the story took place. This short story took place in the 18th/19th century during and after the Civil War in the South. In “A Rose for Emily” the historical context shows the social, economic, and the cultural environment of the background. Miss Emily was born during the Civil War.
I love William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily.” It contains literary devices that Faulkner uses to make the short story perfect. The three literary devices that Faulkner uses are symbolism, setting and point of view. These three literary devices are what makes it an enjoyable story to read.
