The 1912 Election and the Power of Progressivism: A Brief History with Documents by Brett Flehinger is about the four Presidential candidates during the election of 1912, their political parties and campaigns. The book shows how opposed each candidate 's platform was and which problems the candidates agreed on. The book has documents from this time to further aid in understanding what exactly was happening. None of the candidates, however, were as different as Theodore Roosevelt and his predecessor, William Howard Taft. Their platforms and ideas regarding trusts, direct democracy and courts and the constitution differed greatly, whilst they agreed on the important issue of women 's suffrage.
Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft and Woodrow Wilson were considered the Progressive Presidents. Roosevelt was placed into office after the assassination of McKinley in 1901, Taft was elected in 1908, and Wilson was elected in 1912. Wilson was only the second Democratic president to be elected in 50 years. Roosevelt was young, energetic, and a bit impulsive; this was in sharp contrast to the easy going, stand back approach of Taft. Wilson was very intelligent and gave much thought and consideration to each step he made.

Each wanted the United States to be more aggressive when it came to international affairs. They felt being timid was not the way to accomplish this goal; however, instead, they set out to increase our military force extensively. Progressivism was a reform movement that occurred at many different places during 1890-1917 that had these overall goals: to make the government less corrupt and more democratic, to better the effects of industrialization, and to control corporate power. In a world of solitary individuals it is only through alliances that we can survive and achieve success in our endeavors, but it is also true that some alliances are not successful and can doom us to fail. In Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck intentionally characterizes George and Lennie’s alliance as a rare and special achievement to illustrate how success is easier and more likely to be achieved through cooperation with others; however, it is also emphasized that these alliances don’t always work. In chapter 3 Slim comments on the strangeness and uniqueness of George and Lennie’s alliance when he states that “Hardly none of the guys ever travel together” (pg 39) and that they “work a month, and then quit and go out alone” (pg 39).
