ACA Code of Ethics The ACA Code of Ethics assists counselors in protecting clients and ensuring the clients receive the best possible care (American Counseling Association, 2014). Ethical codes apply to all counselors. Some of these include making sure they are competent in working with specific populations, knowledge about community resources available, be willing to advocate for their clients, obtain all necessary forms and consents (Bernal & Coolhart, 2012). Counseling minors can become complicated for the counselors on where to draw the line of confidentiality. Sori and Hecker (2015) suggest a ‘best interests’ agreement that is included in the limits to confidentiality that discusses what exactly will be shared but also the limits to this in regards to the minor’s health, welfare, or significant relationships. Hoocher (2008) points out that sometimes it is necessary to keep information shared confidential due to the nature of topics discussed, such as drugs, sex, peer problems, etc. This being said, there is no guarantee of confidentiality and if something comes up that the counselor feels the parents should know and the counselor will work with the client on how to tell the parents. The case studies will outline specific ethical dilemmas when working with minor clients and their parents. This instrument will be used to explore the opinions of practicing counselors on how to deal with common ethical dilemmas. Some examples of case study topics include client records or case notes, rights for non-custodial parents, sexually active teens, and child abuse from the past.
