Crucial ACA Code of Ethics Section A.1 is essential in developing the client and counselor relationship. The section covers primary responsibility, records and documentation, counseling plans, and support network involvement (ACA, 2014). A.1.a (ACA, 2014) states it the counselor’s responsibility to promote the welfare and respect the dignity of their clients. Failure to respect client’s dignity can cause the client to withdraw from counseling services or not each the clients counseling goal. A.1.b.
Having a personal interest in understanding human nature and behavior made the subject of psychology an appealing topic to study. During the course of my undergraduate education, various specialties were considered: theories of personality, abnormal psychology, and human sexuality, just to name a few. This broad exposure to the field of psychology at Colorado Christian University has only piqued my interest further. The final class, PSY 485A Psychology Senior Seminar, covered an assortment of practical considerations such as employment opportunities for a degree holder of psychology, ethical issues, and pursuing graduate level studies.
A care ethics approach would emphasize and prioritize the agency and empowerment of their patients. This could be done by educating and informing the participants of their condition, their human rights, and the arrangement of possible available treatments to them. Furthermore, the researchers must inform the participants of the purpose of the study and be transparent with them. The second major violation in the study was the lack of beneficence.
Recently, the APA announced guidelines that would endorse specific symptoms, and treatments, for PTSD. This falls under the “specific ingredients” category and associates the mental illness with specific treatments and practices, or guidelines, that the clinicians should follow. In light of these guidelines, a group that argues for “common factors” is taking a stance against APA guidelines. Common factors can be defined as the relationships, ideas, and empathy that spurs from a client-patient relationship that can eventually lead to the client getting better and recovering (in this case, from PTSD).
Additional features of this principle include respect for autonomy and privacy (confidentiality), for all individuals have the right to safety/security and the ability to express themselves. Many of the impacts this principle could have on my consulting project involve contexts in which my consulting team collaborates amongst itself and with NW Noggin. All individuals have the right to their opinions, beliefs, perspectives, ideas, and so forth, so it is only fair every individual receives the same level of respect (which should be mutual). Conversations should be conducted with this principle in mind to give others the space to express themselves without fear of judgment or shame. Adhering to ethical guidelines when handling data is as crucial as respecting someone’s privacy in a conversation. It ensures confidentiality and privacy. But ethics doesn’t stop there. It also extends to how this data is used and interpreted.
The beginning of the article discusses the ethical dilemmas during client support. It argues about two situations in which ethics needs to be considered. Some people argue that ethics is required in every case, while others disagree. There is known that the American Psychological Association is an organization that possesses the scientific knowledge of psychological processes of humans and the use of such knowledge for the benefit of everyone. This is because of its own code of ethics called “The American Psychologist Association’s Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct.” The code of ethics this organization has is divided in four parts: introduction, preamble, general principles, and ethical standards. According to the introduction, psychologists have to know about what they do, and in case a principle is violated, they have to take their own responsibility. Besides, they will be sanctioned for violations of the standards of the Ethics Code.
As brand manager for Kelcie’s potato chips, we feel that it is only right to be 100% transparent in our packaging of potato chips and be honest with the customer that our portion size has decreased by adding a disclaimer on the packaging. We will keep the price the same and even use the same packaging size, but we will simply put fewer chips in each bag. Even though the customer will (probably) not notice that the portion size has decreased, as shown in the AMA Code of Ethics we have a responsibility to “avoid false, misleading and deceptive promotions”, and to avoid “sales tactics that could harm our customer’s trust”. That is why we feel that a strict adherence to the AMA’s Code of Ethic’s transparency guidelines to “create a spirit of openness in marketing operations” is only fair and our ethical responsibility as marketers. Truth in advertising is not only important but if the company is caught trying to advertise their product as more than it actually is, this can have a negative effect on the company’s overall image.
Adherence to professional ethics is a foundational aspect of counseling practice. As students, we are trained to be ethically competent, providing the most principled treatment for our clients. Yet, ethical issues are not just encountered by novice counselors, experienced practitioners face ethical dilemmas throughout their career, as well. The American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics (2014) sets ethical obligations and provides guidance for how to manage ethical dilemmas. The code considers professional values that counselors should be aware of, but also ethical principles that guide practice (ACA, 2014).
