Being a rather shy person I sort of surprised myself by taking on a project of petitioning for the school to put descriptions for the five main pictures on the website. You see, these pictures do not currently have descriptions on them. These descriptions are for people who are blind and use a computer program to read the site page. Without descriptions the program just reads the picture as image. So they have no clue what the picture is is. Is it a lady in a red sweater with curly blond hair eating a ham sandwich? Or is it of a baseball player wearing a black and grey striped baseball uniform with a purple helmet? This project relates to a lot of ideas in the course. The first one being the ADA. ADA is an acronym for Americans with Disabilities Act. Under the ADA a school is listed as a business believe it or not. As a business it is recommended that they follow the voluntary action plan for accessible websites. Speaking of ADA that wouldn’t have come about without the Disability Rights Movement. The Disability Rights Movement was a movement that was used to get equal opportunities and rights for people with disabilities. It's the idea that everyone should be treated and respected as a human being no matter what. While there might not be a whole chapter or time that was devoted to learning this idea during class, it's basically at the root of everything. We have learned that even though someone has a disability they are still human beings. Their wants and needs are no different than ours. They want love and friendship and kindness and understanding. They are 100% human. A person is a person no matter what. This though is what started the Disability Rights Movement.
