I. Introduction a. Identify the client Allen Mack is a 40-year-old African American male currently serving six months of the remainder of his 10-year sentence at the Cherry Health-East Half-Way House in Detroit, MI. Mr. Mack was indicted for Drug Trafficking/Conspiracy and enrolled in the RDAP (Residential Drug and Alcohol Program) program while in prison. RDAP is the Bureau’s most intensive treatment program. CBT is used in a modified therapeutic community model where offenders experience living in a pro-social community.
Other reform includes construction by the governor to build bigger prisons and fill the adult systems, forcing younger ones to be responsible for their crimes. Probation court on the other hand is trying to create a profile for repeat offenders. The idea will help gauge and correct behavior before it gets worse or happens again. The effort is to help the child no punish them. The last reform idea is By DA Gil Garcetti.
Azcourts.gov Arizona Judicial Branch" (2017), “Evidence-based practice (EBP) - means strategies that have been shown through current, scientific research to lead to a reduction in recidivism. EBP is a body of research done through meta-analysis (a study of studies) that has provided tools and techniques that have been proven to be effective at reducing recidivism. These tools and techniques allow probation officers to determine risk and criminogenic characteristics of probationers and place them in appropriate supervision levels and programs. There are eight evidence-based principles for effective offender interventions” (Evidence Based Practice). I may make recommendations for consequences based upon a juvenile’s adjudication.
The Jaycee Lee Dugard case contributed to the overhaul of assessment of risks, needs, and management of offenders within California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation program. Specifically, the role, importance, and connection to risk and needs assessment of offenders in community based correction (Bayens, pg. 91). Phillip Garrido was charged with kidnapped and sexual assault of Jaycee Dugard over 18 years span (1991-2009). The aggravating details arise from the incident is that Garrido was under parole supervision as a sex offender since 1999. During those years, Garrido was hardly supervised due to improper classification as low-risk sex offender and failure of background research.
The role of a predisposition report writer as a juvenile probation officer in the juvenile justice system is to provide the court with a full history of the youth offender, including everything from past criminal history, education, family history, and more. The predisposition writer’s job is to interview family, friends, teachers, victims, and the youth offender to compare all information and make a formal report of the events that occurred. The report will also highlight possible treatment plans, rehabilitation, restitution, or other sanctions. The goal of the predisposition writer in the juvenile justice system is to gather the best information possible through reliable interviewee’s so that the best treatment plan can be prescribed.
• Promote continuums of care for referred and delinquent youth. • Build, maintain and empower a diverse, competent, and professional workforce. • Enhance the quality, availability and use of technology. (Department of Juvenile Services, n.d.)
Although people in favor of centralized probation argue that decentralizing probation has its flaws such as local probation following outdated practices, I believe with the proper training given to local law enforcement they will be better able to train staff with the updated procedures and possibly make a change in a person’s
Researchers found 2-3 years after completing the program, youth had a 30.2% rate of recidivism (Wylie et al, n.d.). Those who did not successfully complete the program had at 51.1% to 61.1% rate of recidivism over the course of 2-3 years (Wylie et al, n.d.). This study also looked at whether the subsequent offenses were more or less severe (Wylie et al, n.d.). Wylie and Hobbs (n.d.) found 75.2% of offenses were of the same severity as the offense for which the youth was in the diversion program. Additionally, 7.6% decreased in severity and 17.2% increased in severity (Wylie et al, n.d.).
Because of the CJAA, Washington State funded and the Washington State Institute for Public Policy (WSIPP) administered the systematic study of four different types of treatment programs for juveniles, including ART. Using a pseudo-random assignment waitlist procedure, WSIPP assigned 1,229 adjudicated youths to either a control (n=525) or treatment group (n=704) throughout 26 different juvenile courts across Washington State (Washington State Institute for Public Policy, 2004). Staff from the 26 participating juvenile courts utilized the Washington State Juvenile Court Assessment (WSJCA), an assessment tool especially designed for the CJAA, to determine whether or not the juvenile was eligible to enter the study. The WSJCA was a two-step process, with the first step involving a pre-screen which assessed criminal history and social history risk scores. Then, only the individuals who were determined to be moderate-risk or high-risk in the pre-screen proceeded to the second step of the assessment which determined a complete risk profile.
In the article “Improving probation officers’ supervision skills: An evaluation of the EPICS model” by Paula Smith, Myrinda Schweitzer, Ryan Labrecque & Edward Latessa, explains the core correctional practices that probation officers should be using with supervision. The acronym EPICS is effective practices in community supervision which is a skill used for supervision (Smith, Schweitzer, Labrecque , & Latessa, 2012). Most probation and parole institutions have adapted to follow evidence base practices and have been informed of the EPICS model which can help with effective supervision (Smith et al, 2012). The purpose of the EPICS model is to provide an example as to how Probation officers translate effective interventions with each client (Smith et al, 2012). There are several core
Local probation departments can impose their rules quicker and more flexible than larger probation departments such as state and federal departments (Siegel & Bartollas, 2014). However, a larger probation department has more resources in acquiring funds for their objectives than smaller departments (Virlee, 2015). The problem associated with larger probation departments are guidelines that are created and implemented among the probationers are sometimes unrealistic due to the negligence it has with a variety of offenders and the guidelines don't meet the requirements for each
As a citizen of the United States it is our obligation to serve on a jury when we are called. It is our duty to be apart of a panel and directly participate in the judicial process. Your decision can ultimately determine one’s life so it’s important to understand the facts from myths. What happens when someone pleas not guilty by reason of insanity (NGRI)? What does that mean?
Audience Profile My target people would use my product because it gives them energy and it tastes nice. It could be used for leisure because you can relax and drink a nice drink. It can be bought as a treat because someone might not be able to buy or find one so if they are given it they will be happy. (Practical?) It is for the home because you can drink it at home.
This is based on the fact that during the period that the probation is administrated by the executive branch or the judiciary, the courts have increased awareness of the required resource by the agency involved in probation. Further on, the judges have a tendency to having increased awareness and confidence in the responsible agency (Whitehead, Jones & Braswell, 2010). In the event that the probation serves are administered on the statewide or centralized basis. It is often integrated into the corrections departments. As a result, the services might be given lower priority compared to the case in the judicial branch.
Final Assignment 1: Summary Report and Self-Evaluation of Internship I was given the wonderful opportunity to intern at Arrowhead Regional Corrections with the probation officers from court and field services. The objectives I was given the ability to work on throughout my internship will help me in future career opportunities in the court services, offender assessments, and offender programming. I was able to work in many different units of court and field services, such as pretrial, DWI and domestic violence. My supervisor, Cassie Smith, was a probation officer from the domestic violence unit, was able to teach me the daily tasks of a probation officer before leaving on maternity leave.
