Final Assignment 1: Summary Report and Self-Evaluation of Internship I was given the wonderful opportunity to intern at Arrowhead Regional Corrections with the probation officers from court and field services. The objectives I was given the ability to work on throughout my internship will help me in future career opportunities in the court services, offender assessments, and offender programming. I was able to work in many different units of court and field services, such as pretrial, DWI and domestic violence. My supervisor, Cassie Smith, was a probation officer from the domestic violence unit, was able to teach me the daily tasks of a probation officer before leaving on maternity leave. It was not uncommon for the offenders on my caseload to lie, or at least not tell the whole truth. Developing trust with the offenders is very important when it comes to them being honest with you. Over time, many of my drug addicts in recovery were able to open up to me if they either had relapsed, or was aware they may relapse due to a stressor. Even if the offender was not directly honest, I was able to get a well written background from family members and significant others, to determine whether or not the offender was being …show more content…
I was warned very early on by multiple probation officers, that I would need a cope for the added stress of this job. Most of the probation officers suggested working out. Working out not only helped them with stress, but kept them in shape just in case a bad situation arose and they would need to protect themselves. They also told me to not take work home. As a requirement of the internship, I had to sign a confidentiality form to protect the offenders I would be working with, but it also helped me from bringing work home. The moment I got home, I tried my best to not think about what happened during the day and focus on my social life. Even though I was only able to work with adults, my internship showed me how the court system worked for both adults and juveniles. As one may see when at the courthouse, all juvenile proceedings are confidential and it is very uncommon for the public to be allowed into the court proceedings of juveniles. All of the probation officers who work with the juveniles have completely different guidelines when it comes to dealing with them. They aren’t necessarily stricter guidelines than the ones that are given with adults, but they certainly deal with different ideas of security and case
