Every good story has to have differing characters to drive the story forward. Some are easy to like while others take some time to understand. However, there is usually at least one that immediately stands out as the villain. In The Crucible, this character is Abigail Williams, a selfish and vindictive girl that loves to cause trouble around town. She is the opposite of Elizabeth Proctor, the honest and caring wife of John Proctor.
It is crazy how things were, so strict about the religions long ago. The times of “The Crucible” everyone would be guilty of being a witch. According i think Abigail William is responsible for witchcraft. Reasons are is because, one she have lied to everyone in the village just to make herself innocent. Second, she have broken many rules and because of that it made her look guilty.
Abigail Williams' remorseless behavior cruelly ended the lives of 19 in Salem. An example of this is when the girls are discovered in the woods,” Parris caught them dancing, with Tituba singing and one of the girls being naked ”(Miller,10-11). Once Abigail was caught, she desperately tried to conceal her actions of that night because Her option to kill his wife would reveal her affair with John Proctor and Have her accused of witchcraft. To deflect the blame from herself she accuses many of witchcraft. Abigail’s remorseless behavior caused deaths because the accused were arrested and many were hanged or died in the jail.
Through harsh rejection and preposterous delusions, Abigail Williams abused her good name and became the fault for the bitter ends of many for something they were not guilty of. I have reread significant sections of The Crucible several times and have read and analyzed it to the best of my ability on multiple occasions. Once reading this book in my Honors English Course at the number one high school in the state of California, we carefully analyzed the characters, going as far as even making character charts, to understand them and their intentions much better. She abhorred Goody Proctor and saw her as the cause for John ending their affair. She’d been dismissed by Elizabeth, which prompted reluctance towards hiring her. When questioned over her sullied reputation, Abigail responded with, “She hates me, uncle, she must, for I would not be her slave. It’s a bitter woman, a lying, cold, sniveling woman, and I will not work for such a woman!” (Miller Act 1, Scene 1, Line 65).
In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Abigail Williams and John Proctor are known to have had an adulterous affair with one another. Even though both John Proctor and Abigail are worthy of blame for their actions, Abigail is the most culpable of the two. In The Crucible, Abigail is the most to blame because of her “tempting” Proctor to carrying out the act more. During Act 1, Abigail is shown to keep egging on Proctor although he does not want to have the affair with her anymore.
Throughout the Crucible we saw the true colors of some of these so called saints. People everyone thought was Holy and pure were the biggest liars and evilest humans. So how can you describe someone as evil and a liar? An evil person can be described as someone who is wicked or immoral, and morally wrong or bad; a liar can be thought of as someone who tells lies. I don’t personally think there is just one person responsible for the wrongful convictions during the salem witch trials.
You drank a charm to kill John Proctor’s wife! You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor” (Miller 19), the reader can clearly determine that Abigail will take any measure to accomplish her selfish goals. This is as Abigail is trying to intimidate the other girls into not saying anything. “She is the consummate seductress; the witchcraft hysteria in the play originates in her carnal lust for Proctor” (Schissel 3). Abigail is the core of “The Crucible”, everything originates in her desire for Proctor, and the way she achieves her goals.
She can be described as threatening, deceitful, and even unstable. Abigail proves herself to be threatening throughout the entire play. One can first see this when Betty, Reverend Parris’ daughter, wakes up and mentions how Abigail was drinking blood to kill John Proctor’s wife, Elizabeth. Abigail screams and says, “-I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you.
In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible Abigail Williams Changes from a powerful maniac with a lot of power over the town of Salem, to a scared little girl with no power over the town. This is because the town was beginning to realize that there are no witches and Abigail was was starting to notice that people are realizing that and so she took Parris’s money and ran away. In the beginning Abigail had no power, but all throughout the first act she slowly grew in power over the town of Salem, she gains her power by doing witchcraft in the woods and then blaming her witchcraft on other people.
The Devil had infiltrated the small town of Salem, Massachusetts and it was up to the townspeople to get to the bottom of it. During the Salem witch trials, the town was surrounded by hysteria and panic. At a vulnerable state, many people let others take advantage of them and blindly trusted anyone who had an inkling about the Devil among the town. Girls like Abigail Williams were trusted on who to blame for witchcraft while others like John Hale were pushed to the side and silenced for questioning the reliability of these blind accusations.
Abigail Williams is the prominent antagonist of Arthur Lee Miller’s The Crucible. Abigail Williams, also known as Abby, deceives others, especially throughout the action of the trial. Her rationale for deception centers around her desires. Her dishonesty hurts many innocent characters throughout the conflict. Abigail is a deceitful person who truly only cares for her gain.
In the beginning of The Crucible, Abigail Williams was all over John Proctor. She was very noticed in the town because the town heard rumors about her and John Proctor. Abigail was on the verge of being charged for witchcraft and she did not want anyone to think she was a witch. Then, she decided to go to John proctor to tell him how they should be together and that he wanted to be with her. She did not like that fact for John did not want to be with her.
Even though she was doing witchcraft, she blamed the action on Elizabeth Proctor (Miller 73). This caused unfixable relationships and trips to court. Abigail was the worst individual that was made in the plot. Abigail Williams caused many problems throughout the play. Most readers would believe that she is to blame for the events that occurred.
Abigail 's heartless attitude is shown in act two when she frames and accuses Elizabeth Proctor for witchcraft. She desired and longed for this revenge on poor Proctors innocent wife, aiming for her through out the play. Later on in Act Three she seems to lose her last attachment of society by destroying John Proctor, who she claims to love with all her heart. When John attempts and threatens to expose Abigail’s wrong doings, she skillfully manages to turn the whole problem around on him, sending him off
