Can one girl make an entire town go crazy about witchcraft? Based on the facts found in the book “The Crusible”, most would say that many could be held responsible for the mass witchcraft hysteria. However, I strongly believe that Abigail Williams is the most responsible for the salem witch trials. Not only does she lie to the court and town’s people she also manipulates a few girls to go along with her plan. At first, Abigail lies to the court and town’s people about Tituba and Goody Proctor, resulting in them to go to jail and many deaths in the town.
In a small village called Salem, witchcraft and sorcery exist, however everyone is pointing fingers but not a single soul knows who is actually to blame for this nonsense. During this time period of hysteria, there are multiple scenes that are very questionable due to one person and one person only. Abigail is the one most responsible for the hysteria and witchcraft in Salem. She threatens the group of girls that accompanied her in the woods while they all danced. She has also lied about many things on multiple occasions in which causes an extreme amount of suspicion.
In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible and in M. Night Shyamalan 's film, The Village both contained examples of jealousy transforming a character’s demeanor. In The Crucible, Abigail Williams had a loving demeanor towards John Proctor when they had an affair. However, after the discussion with John in Act One, it enlarged her jealousy towards his wife, Elizabeth. Abigail felt this way because she knew that his wife was in the way of their love (Miller 22-24). Over the course of the play, her desire for John had significantly increased and she jealously acted on the strategy to conspire against Elizabeth.
Although Abigail Williams does not physically appear in Act 2, her presence is felt throughout The Crucible. She affects and hurts the lives of her family. She is the main source of trouble. If she wants something, she'll get it. At the beginning, there is a lot of closeness between her and the proctor family.
Arthur Millers, “The Crucible”, was written in 1953 about the Salem witch trials that took place in 1692. John Proctor, a small farmer, had an affair with Abigail Williams before the play started. Once his wife found out, she put Abigail out and John ended the affair. Abigail Williams is most responsible for the deaths which took place in the play. She is also one of the main characters because she and the other children of the town cried witchery.
Some people think that Abigail is not guilty of witchcraft but i do think she is guilty of witchcraft because she lies alot to a bunch of people. Usually some think that you are innocent until proven guilty but you can tell that she is but all the lies she tells. There is no doubt that Abigail is guilty because she lied about seeing the witches because she did not want to get in trouble by Mr. John Proctor. She danced with the witches in the woods and she was the lier of the whole entire town
In Arthur Miller`s play The Crucible, the relationship between Abigail and Elizabeth shows you how easy people are to stab you in your back. In Salem, Massachusetts, in the spring of 1692 a group of young girls are caught doing witchcraft. Abigail, niece of reverend Parris, leads a bunch of girls into the forest to conjure up spells to get rid of her lover’s wife, Elizabeth Proctor. At the end Abigail doesn`t succeed in ruining Elizabeth`s life. Instead Elizabeth is able to forgive her husband for the affair and see that it is not her who is the victim.
First and foremost, one of the most destructive consequences that Abigail’s accusations create is the hangings of harmless beings. This is due to the rotten seed that her claims plant into everyone’s brain. The seed develops into a wicked, twisted weed and skews the visions of everyone in the town, including the people that form the backbone of the court system. Out of fear, the judge and court officials willingly accept Abigail’s allegations even though she does not provide any sufficient evidence. It is absent to the court officials’ knowledge that Abby and her comrades are actually faking the occurrences and visions they claim to have.
Abigail uses the fact that every person shes accused has been a witch to secure her position as a trust worth witness in court. As seen when the suspension is raised to her, Abigail says, “I have been hurt, Mr. Danforth; I see my blood running out! I have been near to murdered every day because I have done my duty pointing out the Devil’s people -- and this is my reward? To be mistrusted, denied, questioned like a --” (113). She uses the fact that there is a perceived danger in callout witches as one can try to kill her because they feel threated or that she 's been hurt by witchcraft when it was just self-inflicted wounds.
In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller the Salem trials come about in a deeply religious and superstitious society of puritans. The majority of the characters in the play become convinced that the removal of the devils spirit and witches from their community is the work of God. However, there are many intense feuds and rivalries in the small town that arise, which leads to the Salem residents taking advantage of the witch trials to express animosity and to plot the perfect revenge on their enemies. Abigail Williams was the original source of the hysteria in Salem. Abigail's hysteria was fueled by her hatred toward Elizabeth Proctor "She hates me, uncle; she must, for I would not be her slave.
She accuses Elizabeth of casting a spell on her that caused her to be stabbed, but she really had stabbed herself. Abigail wants revenge on Elizabeth since she is in love with Proctor and Elizabeth is in the way justifying her ethics. In The Crucible Elizabeth is loving towards others unlike Abigail who revengeful. For the duration of The Crucible Elizabeth and Abigail express very contradictory traits following the theme of protecting their integrity.
The Crucible, a story that deals with the subject of the Salem witch trials, involves many important and unanswered questions. Whether or not real witches appeared in Salem or only paranoid and superstitious people, remains an unanswered question to this day. Multiple important characters appeared throughout the story, those people made the most impact to the story. Overall for “The Crucible” the most important character hands down, Abigail Williams. Her role in the story belongs with the other teenage girls, someone saw them doing something they should not have done, they lied, setting off a chain reaction of events and thus starting the witch trials.
but in reality she was caught attempting to cast a spell on Elizabeth. The reason for her trying to cast a spell is because Abigail falls in love with John Proctor but he is married to Elizabeth but that doesn’t bother Abigail.
The crucible is a disturbing drama that used to happen on a real event in the American history. Salem witch trials Abigail is the main and an antagonist character from the crucible. Abigail grew up without father and mother but instead she grew up to be an insecure person. This young lady is selfish, manipulating and a great liar. She has bad name in Salem, Abigail is known as a person who causes problems everywhere she goes.
In the play The Crucible, Arthur Miller does an incredible job of portraying the character’s personalities. From the beginning of the play, Miller is able to connect various different situations to dilemmas that are going on with the characters. A particular character in which Miller is able to show a collection of character traits is with Abigail Williams. Throughout the play, I found myself able to relate to many of Abigail 's characteristics. Abigail Williams and I both let jealousy evoke the best of us, are able to manipulate situations, and tend to be self absorbed.
