On June 3 1992, the legal decision of the Mabo case was made by the High Court, the highest court in Australia’s legal system (Webb, 2008). For thousands of years before the arrival of the British in 1788, Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders have had their strong connection to the Australian Land. When the British arrived in 1788, it was declared that the country was terra nullius (land belonging to nobody), which resulted to the absence of recognition towards the connection between the Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders and the Australian land. The declaration of terra nullius also resulted to the British taking land without agreement or payment towards the indigenous Australians (Webb, 2008).
According to many historians, 1917 was the worst year in WW1 for Australians. This year was the third year in a devastating war that many Australians believed we should have been involved with because it was on the other side of the world. Due to the distance and the number of deaths, volunteer numbers dropped considerably. It was because of this, that the Australian government wanted to introduce a divisive policy of conscription. 1917 Was truly a destructive year for Australia and Australians.
· What are the impacts of the issues identified above on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples? Was the impact positive/negative? Justify your answer. The impact is negative because many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders live in situations of social-economic disadvantage, including homelessness, poverty or unemployment.
Residential schools were indubitably gruesome and immoral acts by the federal government to assimilate the Aboriginal culture to gain power. I was very surprised to learn that 150 000 Aboriginal children were forced to attend residential schools. It is crazy to fathom that so many human beings were tortured, neglected, abused and treated wrongfully while others let it happen for decades. I also found it surprising that the government surveyed the Aboriginal communities and the number one complaint was residential schools and yet no action was taken. If the federal government never intended to listen to the Aboriginals then why did they bother spending time doing surveys in the first place?
Canada is known for its amazing healthcare and it is considered one of the best in the world. In Canada, healthcare is ‘universal’ to its citizens under the Heath Care Act. However, not everyone has equal access to healthcare, Aboriginals being some of them. Aboriginals have trouble getting the access they need because of socio-economic status, geography, lack of infrastructure and staff, language or cultural barriers an more. Aboriginals on reserve face many barriers when it comes to access to healthcare, they include cost, language, distance, climate, education and more.
Abstract Being an aborigine in a white dominated society is a complicated identity. Australia, one of the white governed nations, also owns many aboriginal tribes. They lived harmonious lives in the early period. But European colonization has made a profound effect on the lives of Aboriginals in Australia, which led to the total demolition of their native culture, identity and history. As a result the new generation Aboriginals have lost their Aboriginal heritage and have been accepted neither by Aboriginals nor by whites.
Since 1992 and under the Migration Act, asylum seekers that arrive to Australia without a valid visa must be held in an immigration detention until they are granted a visa or removed from the (Australian Human Rights Commission, 2016). Although this law is effective, it is obvious that this is not the best option for the country, and is not working as planned. If an asylum seeker arrives to Australia without a visa, or ‘unauthorised’, they must be held in mandatory detention whilst their refugee claims are decided, (Australian Human Rights Commission, 2005) along with their health, identity and security check to be completed. These processes can be lengthy and difficult, meaning that the asylum seeker or refugee may be held in detention for much longer than needed.
Ethnocentrism occurs when one culture comes into contact with another. It the evaluation of one culture based on preconceived ideas that have derived from the customs and traditions from one’s own culture. William Summer, an American sociologist, believes that an ethnocentrism is “A view of things in which one’s own group is the centre of everything and all others are scaled and rated in reference to it” (Sorrells 2013). This phenomenon can have detrimental outcomes; such as stereotyping and prejudice both of which may hinder intercultural relations and assimilation therefore impacting on societal cohesion.
Aboriginal people are the very first people to inhabit the Canadian land. Many years ago, English and French men came and forcibly took over the land that the Natives owned. They introduced alcohol and many deadly diseases that made the First Nations very vulnerable. For many years they have been systemically oppressed. Oppression is “a set of policies, practices, traditions, norms, definitions, and explanations which function to systematically exploit one social group to the benefit of another social group” (Sensoy, O., DiAngelo, R.).
We’ve all heard the Australian stereotypes. But where do the stereotypes come from? Australia’s identity encompasses many widespread stereotypes, some of which are used advantageously to promote Australia on a global scale. Globally, Australia’s main stream identity is that of a baron outback. Adding to the collective stereotype; bogans and yobbos have played a developmental role in the Australians characteristic identity.
There is a long standing debate on whether generic drugs are as effective and safe as the branded drug. A brand name drug is a medicine that is discovered, developed, and marketed by a pharmaceutical company and is protected by a patent. A generic drug is said to be a bioequivalent of the branded drug and does not have a patent by it self and is manufactured and marketed only after the expiration of the branded drugs patent. Brand name drugs are well known and trusted but are expensive. Generic drugs are less expensive than the brand name drugs but drugs are not always trusted by the people.

The way that society sees you should not depend on the colour of your skin. Even today, in the 21st century, people in our society judge other human beings by their colour or race. One of the main racism issues is the discrimination towards our Indigenous people. National data from the Challenging Racism Project reveals that 27% of Aboriginal people over the age of 15 experience racism more than once in their life. Racism towards Indigenous Australians includes mostly verbal abuse such as name-calling and insulting language.

The term racism is when people from different cultures are treated differently based on their race. Racism is a disease with endless consequences . Over time it’s shocking that people think that others are different to them only because of their skin colour and culture. Racism has been and still is a prolific evil in the Australian society. Evidence of this includes The Stolen Generation, migrant treatment and social media.
