Indigenous groups, and their relationships to the land and the environment, are connected deeply to the core. Land and environment is a part of their identity, and is rooted in their culture and history. Innu tribe, which sometimes are called Montagnais, or Naskapi, are aboriginal peoples, who are located in areas of Quebec and Labrador. Montagnais, which is translated in French as mountain people. It relates to the people who live in forested, more southern communities.
The land- The land is the aboriginals resources, it’s their way of survival. They give to the land and the land gives back to them. They use the land for food and water. Also the land is filled with their spirits, the animals are the spirits of the elders who have passed away.
The Ngunnawal People have been living within the borders and surrounding mountains of the Australian Capital Territory for over 25,000 years. The way the Indigenous people used the land to live off was extremely efficient and sustainable. They had a bounty of knowledge about the land surrounding them, and over generations, devised resourced management skills to ensure maintenance of the animals and plants, and most importantly, the land in which provided these things. Aboriginal culture existed long before Captain Cook arrived in Australia in 1770. He claimed the land to be "Terra-Nullius", meaning that the land did not belong to any person.
Aboriginal people taught their children the Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) about the area they lived in and how to live off the land. They also taught important morals through fictional stories they made. The First Nations people taught everything orally. They had no form of writing. Most people at the time thought of the First Nations as primitive for their nomadic lifestyle and way the First nations were taught.
Week ones study was focused on the Aboriginal Acknowledgement of Country and the Indigenous terms of reference. These are two very important topics as they focus on the interaction between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Australians, fostering a relationship a relationship of trust, respect and understanding. A proper understanding of the Aboriginal Terms of Reference is an integral tool for an aspiring teacher such as myself. They encompass the cultural knowledge, understanding and experiences that are at the center of the Indigenous culture (Oxenham, 1999).
Since colonisation in 1788 Europeans believed the Aboriginal peoples to be a primitive race with no societal structures in place because their system did not resemble one that was recognizable or fit within it did not resemble a system that was recognizable by white settlers. National identity is believed to be a general concept that referred to a broad set of codes with a shared understanding within a nation, and the sense of belonging that is reinforced through myths, symbols, media activities, and everyday practices (Carter, 2006, p. 7; Van Krieken et al., 2017, pp. 234-244). Australia is now regarded as a diverse country with an identity that has evolved over time and will continue to do so. For Indigenous Australians to conform to this national identity, they had to assimilate and give up their values, beliefs, and cultural rights to become more like white Australia.
South Sea Islanders did not have a major contribution to the convivial perspective in Australia due to the conditions faced by the South Sea Islanders. Their position on the gregarious hierarchy was very low as they were treated like slaves. The were optically canvassed as outsiders and called vilifying names to remind them of where they stand. They faced many discrimination as the Queensland system of labour discriminated against their race, this lead to farther discrimination. ASSI weren’t sanctioned in mainstream hospitals, withal experienced kindred disadvantages as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders cultural beliefs and practices vary depending on region. They live a hunter/gather lifestyle. The land and environment they live in is fundamental to the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The land is not just simply soil, rocks and minerals, but rather an entire area that manages and is maintained by individuals and culture.
Source 1 depicts the lack of collectivism between the Aboriginal people and the generation we live today. This shows the strong liberal stance in which has been imposed onto the minds of Aboriginal people. “In the earlier days, people shared food even if they didn’t have much, as long as there was a little bit of extra food” shows the major decline of food in the ancient generation of Inuit people. When people came close to each other, their collectivist ideas grew into a much a larger extent in which sharing became a fundamental part of their life. These people are not been bothered to look after, thereby growing into a minority society.
Culture includes all of humanity in the construction and conveying aspects of social life. Since born, the socialisation process is a path of adoption of the behaviour patterns of the surrounding culture to the social groups and the community on what is a symbol and value systems (Kirmayer & Swartz, 2014).
