President Abraham Lincoln receives criticism for not being ‘a true opponent of slavery’ because he allowed slavery in some states while declaring other states as legal slave states. Lincoln thought that slavery in some border states should be allowed if it meant keeping those states in the Union. He wanted preserve and strengthen the Union, even if it meant slavery in the Union. He made his choices on how to react to the war with the concern of the preservation of the Union. He neglected the issue of racial equality. Rather, Lincoln did not agree with the practice of slavery, but he did not want freed slaves to achieve equal status to the white man. People feared the aftermath of abolition, and Lincoln could not provide an answer to the potential aftermaths of abolishment.. However, he knew the nation need slavery to end in order to preserve the Union. One cannot determine their own interpretation of one’s right dependent on their individual interest. If the South did not agree with the actions of the government, they should not leave it just because their minority interest were denied.
