Name: NISSI EKANEM Date: 05/08/2018 CRN: 58679 DBQ ESSAY Abraham Lincoln and the Struggle for Union and Emancipation, 1861–1865 Even though Abraham Lincoln is remembered as the president that "abolished" slavery, it is also important to remember that there were two sides of the story. “If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves, I would do it; and if I could do it by freeing some and leaving others, I would also do that”. This quote is from Abraham Lincoln's letter to newspaperman Horace Greeley.
The leadership and legacy of Ulysses S Grant Ulysses was born on April 27, 1822 and died on July 23, 1885. He was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio. Ulysses helped America win the Civil War and stop slavery. An interesting fact about Ulysses S. Grant was that his real name was Hiram Ulysses Grant. This war contributor was important to America because without him leading us in war it is possible that we would have lost the war which could cause us to still have slaves today.
In the articles "Waiting for Mr. Lincoln" and "Life and Times of Frederick Douglass" both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass are portrayed as effective leaders. They shared qualities such as respect, determination, and confidence, which are essential for good leadership. One quality between Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass was respect. Lincoln showed respect by attentively listening to Frederick. In the article "Life and Times of Frederick Douglass", Frederick Douglass wrote, “Mr. Lincoln listened with patience and silence to all I had to say.”
After watching the movie Lincoln, we can see how President Lincoln interacts with many different people and groups throughout his terms. Presidents play a major role in policy making and in creating different things. In this movie, President Lincoln creates crucial relationships with the congress and cabinet to help pass his amendment. All while going through this, he deals with his family problems and relationship issues. Many things between President Lincoln’s relationships or older presidents relationships compared to recent presidents relationships are different within the congress, cabinet, and their family because the presidents have different ideologies and there is different policies and ideas focused on the president today.
At the start of the Civil War, Lincoln used the power of the North’s navy. The navy of the North was really strong compared to that of the South’s naval force. The North ended up closing the ports of the Southern states, which prevented the South from getting war supplies from Europe. Lincoln also realized that the Mississippi River was for splitting the South in half. Lincoln also had internal problems of his role as commander-in-chief.
In my opinion, I strongly argue that Lincoln was not racist. He believed that “negro” equality is guaranteed by the laws of God according to Document A. Abraham Lincoln always listened to his people’s desires, even if that meant to shun his own beliefs. His dream was to provide the best equality for his people. Lincoln despised slavery and believed that all African Americans were men and they were all created equal as stated in the US Constitution. Lincoln has done many actions to help his citizens and to gain their equality.
One of the many qualities that a leader must possess is that they are selfless. A true leader will not put himself/herself above everyone else, they will simply guide the society into the right path. There is an excellent example of this trait in the novel, Lord of the Flies. “There’s no man with a trumpet. Only me.”
How do we Keep Abraham Lincoln’s Promise to our Veterans and Their Families? Abraham Lincoln once promised, “To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan.” This promise is to remind us to never forget the cost of freedom and what veterans did for our country. How do we as Americans keep his promise?
In this world today there were and are many very good leaders, but for every good leader there was a bad leader. Three of the best leaders in this world were Martin Luther King Jr., Adolf Hitler, and Abraham Lincoln. However where there is good there is always a bad. A bad leader in this nation would be Richard Nixon. Abraham Lincoln was man of many words.
Perhaps, it also took Frederick Douglass courage to be able to distinguish himself as a life changer and a freeman. He knew that being free was going to be a challenge, considering the fact that he was one of the only slaves during his time that saw it necessary of to end slavery. Douglass saw himself and other just like himself in an unlawful situation, a situation that once he gained more about made it easier for him to depict what was right and wrong. He being like any other slave with fears and doubts was still able to encounter the inhuman treatment of a slave master, however going through those transitions made him a strong and brave individual because not many will stand out and take that leadership role, especially if it means the possibly
The book of Acts is riddled with accounts of servant leaders who rose up to become the examples of what servant ministry looks like. Actually, not one of them would have been the leaders they were without the ultimate example of Jesus. He was the epitome of what servant leadership should look like. All through-out Jesus’ ministry he served others, feeding, healing, and ministering to them. Day after day he lead by example and in C. Gene Wilkes book, “Jesus on Leadership” Gene gives seven leading principles to lead as Jesus lead.
Abraham Lincoln was viewed by the American people as man who freed negro slaves. In his heart he felt slavery was unethical and morally wrong but there were certain things written in the Constitution that protected slavery. After the Civil War Lincoln was labeled the “Great Emancipator”. Although some may have looked at Lincoln as the “Great Emancipator” his primary focus was to keep all the states in the union while using the Civil War as a tool to end what he felt was morally wrong and end slavery.
She used her leadership to push her people to start believing in themselves and moving forward. She inspired her people, creating this vision of a better Liberia of women having a voice. Sirleaf showed Spears 10 characteristics of servant leadership. As a servant leader, she listens to those around her, she listens to the women who were protesting. She even went to West Point during the Ebola crisis and listened to the people problems.
Servant leadership believes one should provide priority to others interest. Leaders should server others to meet their desires, needs and aspiration. Leaders should service and develop their employees (Nahavandi, 2015) leaders do not encourage leaders to go over and beyond to meet the need of the individual problems. Servant leadership listens, persuades, and give empathy during times of crisis. Authentic leaders adapt their style to the situation.
A great example of this is Nelson Mandela. He put himself out there to do what he thought was right, he was sentenced to life in jail for it but thats when he grew the most to becoming a great leader: by making mistakes, admitting to it, and learning from them. Empathy: Caring about people instead of the outcome. When you care about people and not the outcome it makes you vulnerable.
